Watching last night's game was pretty awesome for a lot of the obvious reasons with hating the Patriots.
However, a nice little side bonus was watching Brock Osweiler look competent again, and thinking we have a QB that we are taking the same approach with, who is probably in the same neighborhood as a prospect Osweiler was. Not saying they are similar types, just probably about the same likelihood to succeed. Things could go south for Osweiler obviously, but he looks to at least have a shot to be a competent NFL starter.
There is no doubt in my mind that letting QBs sit and learn on the job for at least 1 season is the way to go. Especially with the way college offenses are.
Not that the Jets are in any position to fold up shop this season, but I hope they continue with the slow grooming of Petty and at some point either next year or the year after, he'll get his shot and hopefully will have a fighting chance to be successful.

Solid post. Petty has the tools needed to be a good QB. Hopefully he absorbs as much as possible.

I'm anxious to see him play in a regular season game. I know it would take a roster spot but I wouldn't mind seeing him get some snaps late in a game like the one yesterday against the Fins to further expose him to the speed of the game.

Why? to appease the fans? Brock was drafted in 2012 i believe... he's had 3 plus seasons to get where he is. Not saying that's the standard, but 1 season is a nice start. In Petty's case - i'd say he'd benefit from 2-3 seasons as well. It's too bad there's not a 2-3 vet for him to learn under.

I indicated the purpose would be to get him some game time experience as part of his learning process. Ideally, in games such as yesterday's ass kicking of the Fins.

We threw Sanchez and Geno to the wolves right away and they will probably never be competent NFL QBs. Chad Pennington had a couple of years to watch and learn and he was great when finally given a chance (before his arm fell off). I'm sure there were other factors that went into it, but I'm all for taking the patient approach with Petty, particularly as he learns behind a smart and willing mentor like Fitz.

I was thinking the same yesterday and trying to consider what we might do to better prep Petty. I remember Chad was always with the OC (Hackett?) watching Vinny and giving him notes, a real student of the game.
Should Petty be on the sideline or with Chan? To work on reading?
Also, shouldn't Petty be working on his footwork 24/7? That's a major change for him vs. the Baylor system right?

No clipboard or tablet and not talking to Fitz or even Geno. What are they grooming him for?.... ball boy?

Since Petty was inactive he can't dress and Fitzpatrick is kind of busy to be taking to an inactive 3rd stringer during the game and talking to Geno is like talking to Mr Potato Head, what do you expect? Great post otherwise....

Baylor is a one read offense. QBs aren't asked to do pre-snap diagnosis.

Once we're out of playoff contention - why not toss him in there?

I also saw him in street clothes during the game, and also got the impression he was little more than a spectator. Is he prohibited from wearing a headset, and listening to the plays? I would think he should be following the flow of the game, then asking questions, or answering questions when quizzed during the film review of the game.

I agree we let Petty sit and learn. I think Fitz is more than capable of leading this team into the playoffs and if coached correct with the right players Deep in the next year or so. I see Fitz only getting better as time goes on if we can keep the base of what we have on the field. With that I say this offseason we dump Geno and bring in another QB through the Draft or FA, pref the draft, but make Petty 2nd and lets see him start to get into the fold a bit. I am pretty sure Philly will take Geno of our hands. I hate to take a shot that Fitz goes down and now we are left with Petty, but these are the chances you take.
