The kids clearly has a lot of work to do. His speed off the edge is nice, but he's not so fast that he is able to beat an OT cleanly when they know it's coming. The Giants OTs had little difficulty riding and re-routing him behind the the QB. I noticed he busted out a few inside spin moves but they were really ineffective. He would spin clockwise like it was an inside move, but his body remained in the same exact place, like a pirouette. He would literally spin in a circle and end up in the exact same place he started.
I love the kids fire and enthusiasm, but he really needs to work on his technique. I'm thinking Maudlin and the Jets entire D-line would benefit greatly if the Jets hired a pass-rush coach.

That's why he was a third rounder. I think you are right that they need to hire a coach specifically for this. He also unfortunately does not have a vet to learn from on the roster.

Kid is all engine, gets pushed beyond but will get there on second effort if the secondary holds up. Versus Coples et all moving like pacman ghosts....

Totally agree, but I don't think we drafted him to get coverage sacks. I am concerned about his size combined with his lack of natural pass rush ability. He only has speed and a fire in his belly right now. The Jets list him as 6'4" 243 lbs. It might sound big, but he looks pretty small when he is taking on an OT. Remember Aaron Maybin? He was listed as 6'4" 240 lbs when he was on the Jets, and he got pushed way beyond the QB on every outside pass rush because he refused to even attempt an inside move and either could not or would not bulk up. Speed is never enough to succeed as pass rusher. You need an effective inside move or the ability to bull rush. The OT needs to be concerned about more than one thing. So Maudlin needs to bulk up and get stronger without losing much speed so he can bull rush if need be or he needs to develop an effective inside move (both would be preferable). This will be his first off-season as a pro so he can really accomplish a lot if he sets his mind to it.

We could not get Gholston or Maybin to do either.
