Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills hurt, but only New York Jets fans would turn a bad loss into the worst game in team history. The loss was not that bad, despite the outcome, and the season ended as a resounding success. No amount of Rex Ryan can take away what the Jets accomplished. No amount of falling short can change how much fun this season was. Stop whining. Missing the playoffs sucks, but we've been here before. We've been here lots of times, yet this year we can tread new ground because our team is good.
It's really hard to win the Super Bowl, and only one thing makes it a little bit easier. Playing with a chip on your shoulder is the best way to gain advantage, overcome hurdles, and achieve the ultimate victory. The Carolina Panthers have played with one all year, after being run through the mud as a playoff team with a losing record last season. The Seattle Seahawks played with one until they finally won a Super Bowl. The New England Patriots continue to find a new one every year. Now the New York Jets have one too.
Losing is great medicine, especially for a rookie head coach and a team playing together for its first full season. The Jets received their medicine from the last person they wanted it from, and the best person to hand it to them. Rex Ryan knows our team best, and exploited all its weaknesses twice this season. Perfect football escaped the Jets, Ryan and his Bills got under New York's skin, and the lesson was learned the hard way. Finding solace in a loss is great and all, but is missing the playoffs this season actually better in the long run than having made it?
Here are the results from the 1st season of each of the last four Jets' head coaches.
Todd Bowles: 10-6 in 2015 Rex Ryan: 9-7 in 2009, AFC Wildcard Eric Mangini: 10-6 in 2006, AFC Wildcard Herm Edwards: 10-6 in 2001, AFC Wildcard
I'm happy to break the cycle, despite its current medicine. Year two under Ryan and Edwards also resulted in the playoffs, while Mangini and his team fell on their faces. Yet by year three and four, both Ryan and Edwards were also hitting stumbling blocks. The cycle is broken. Let the past die.
With a winning record the New York Jets proved themselves and created a foundation for next season. Re-signing current players will take top priority, while creating depth and filling a few major holes will be off-season priorities two and three. This is the first time in a long time that I want Gang Green to bring back its quarterback. I want the offense to be re-united and fully healthy. The absence of Bilal Powell sent waves through the team in Sunday's loss. We need to bring back all our guys, and I have all the confidence in our GM after last year.
Don't let this losing feeling suck you into the past. These Jets are not the same, despite falling short. These Jets broke the cycle, and got me excited for an offseason of possibility. I loved watching the 2015 New York Jets until the very end. profootballspot.com/index.html/nfl/afc-east/new-york-jets/new-york-jets-season-review-losing-is-best-medicine-r14888/

10-6 should've been enough for the playoffs, but until we can play better on the road and stop losin to AFC teams so everyone has fuckin tiebreakers over us you can forget it.
Fuckin team had no problem beating Dallas, Giants and Washington and every other fucker from the NFC, but throws games to the Raiders, Bills and Texans and then wonders why it's on the outside lookin in.

Hearing the same excuse for over 40 years now. If this was best medicine the Jets would be a dynasty by now. Fact is when your team was playing hot and had a must win game which they should have easily won non of the season of almost making the playoffs matters. I remember under Parcells the Jets almost making it to the super bowl say it's a learning process that next year would be their year. That year came and Vinny was carted off the field. When you have the opportunity you take it because you don't know what will happen the next year. Next year Fitz or Marshall could blow their knee out the defense could lose half the starters to injury. In the NFL the future is now not next year.

Was another year of "what if's". 2 plays vs.Buffalo we are AFC no. 1 seed.. 1st and goal at the end of game one Thursday night, and 1 pass for a TD last week... 2 plays going differently.just 2. That's how close it was. Instead, 10 wins=stay home this year. That's what I will take from this year.

Every year I tell myself not to go "all in" with this team. Every year I fail miserably.
This year took a lot out of me. I never thought we were a SB contender, I do however thought we could have beaten Cincy in Cincy had we got in.
Any kind of playoff experience would have been great for this team. What a fucking shame the real Fitz came out back where the real Fitz gained his reputation as a guy who throws picks in clutch situations.
Fucking shame.

I agree with the OP. Missing the playoffs sucks this year because the confrence is weak and there was an opportunity to make a run. However, the future looks brighter than its looked since I thought Chad was going to lead this team to the promised land. The management team in place is good for the first time since the Tuna was here and I have confidence in them to make the necessary moves and develop the players on this team and those to come. Player acquisition is important but player development is the key. In 6 years, Rex and his coaching staff didn't develop one young offensive player they brought in to be even average at his position. Think of it ... any offensive player that could be considered average was either developed by Mangini (e.g., Mangold, Brick) or arrived above average (e.g., Santonio, Braylon). Rex did not develop one. In fact there weren't too many on defense either oustide the dline (and that was probably all Dunbar but I will give Rex credit for that) - no linebackers and no defensive backs. We've already seen this coaching staff develop Fitz, Powell, Enunwa (despite the drops Sunday), and Winters, Carpenter and Giocomini all were better then the years prior. On defense, Leonard Williams, Mauldin, Pryor (Rex swung and missed), Skrine and Marcus Williams all look like young players that are developing into above average players at their positions. I believe the future is bright.

The pain of Sunday is still not subsiding. As others have mentioned, had we got in with the way the AFC looks, we genuinely had a chance to make a run.
I've very little confidence for next year lookin at the schedule, crying Shame we could not get it done this year.
Add all this to the Rex factor and it doesn't get much worse than this.
What I find typical Jets is the wins over NFC over AFC teams, swap this Dallas, Skins and Giants wins for Bills, Raiders and Texans and we would've had the tiebreaker over Pittsburgh at 10-6
We just back ourselves into a corner all the time.

So f'in sick of hearing how it was a step in the right direction and blah blah blah. Next year will be completely different. It's a huge missed opportunity this year. It's not as bad as losing the 4 AFC championship games (or even The division loses to the Browns and Pitt - Doug f'in brien) because u truly never know when u will get that close again. When u r that close u HAVE to win those. But this hurts too.

I like the idea of setting up the thought that 10 wins simply isn't good enough. It didn't get the Jets to the playoffs this year so our coaches, players, etc. understand that you can't simply rest on past accomplishments. You have to close out strong and you need to look back and recognize that some losses which may have felt meaningless at the time....Oakland, Houston, Philadelphia...each turned out to be the difference between a playoff season and a sofa season.
In a way, the Arizona Cardinals have learned this as well. The Cardinals had 11 wins last year and it didn't win them the division. They lost a road playoff game to Carolina and learned that even if you've accomplished a lot it may not be enough to get you where you want to be (home field advantage, Bye week in the playoffs, etc.)
As we all know now, some early playoff appearances by Rex built a sense of false confidence in the team. They thought they were better than they really were. We're now in an opposite kind of situation and, even though it's painful, it might be best for the team in the long run. No matter how good of a season it was the Jets know they weren't a playoff team and realize just how important every September and October is.
