There is currently a lot of speculation involving the QB situation in Tennessee. Reports are now starting to surface that Cutler may be heading to the Titans, while others are guessing that Tennessee will select Winston or Mariotta at the top of the draft. If any of those instances occur, it may make Zach Mettenberger available. Mettenberger had decent numbers this season for Tennessee while playing for an absolutely horrific team. Would you be willing to trade a mid round pick for Mettenberger and go into next season with a competition between Mettenberger, Smith and a vet (say Hoyer)?

He's under the rookie cap - don't think Tennessee would give up on him that quickly.

It wouldn't exactly hurt to have Mariota/Winston ride the bench for the first 6-8 games next year while Mettenberger starts.

Bro it sounds a lot like Doooon't Caaare is pretty much all set to go down there. Then they still need a quality backup. So why not keep Mettenberger who is making essentially peanuts and will have a year under his belt in Whisenhunt's system?

I loved Mettinberger at LSU and was hoping we'd take a flyer on him with one of the many late round picks we had (damn you Idzik). A pocket passer with a cannon arm would love to bring him in here, hire a guru and develop him. But he's not going anywhere for the reasons you guys said.

More importantly wouldn't that free up their pick to not take a QB in the draft?

I don't like Cutler for us - but look at this fcknig arm: media2.giphy.com/media/NrUA8kjqvq1GM/200.gif60 yards in the air like he's throwing his golden a tennis ball . . . I could def see how a guy like Wisenhunt could prefer/want him over Mariota/Winston - espc if TENN feels Tampa is going to grab the one QB they (TENN) would actually want.

It's easy to fall in love with that. Later you learn the bitch is crazy.

It's exactly why I compare him to Jeff George. He has an incredible arm but he's a total dickhole that has just never been able to put it all together. Cutler is what he is at this point. It's not like he has tons of room to grow. He's been a starter in this league for the better part of a decade.

The George comp is pretty spot on arm-wise - though I think Cutler's overall ability is a step above JG.

Look at it this way. If they sign Cutler or draft 1 of the QBs, that is going to be a commitment to any of the 3 for likely the next 3 years. Whitehurst is a capable backup. Accordingly, if you can obtain a mid round pick for Mettenberger (similar to what the Pats did with Mallet) why wouldn't the Titans at least look into it.
