For now, you keep all 4 unfortunately unless you get a solid trade offer for Geno.
With the exception of QB, the Jets have a playoff caliber roster. Don't debate it. They do. Average Offensive line but a full complement of weapons on Offense. Special Teams looks vastly improved. The Defense is elite.
With several guys in the twilight of their careers like Matt Forte, Darrelle Revis, etc. the Jets can't risk an injury to Fitz putting them in a position like the Texans were last year. We'd need to go to Geno, his warts and all, if Fitz goes down simply because of Geno's NFL experience.
The longer term question, beyond this year and after Fitz and Geno are gone is what's intriguing. I'll start a separate poll on that one.

This. All other guesswork aside, if Petty is cut he wont make it to the practice squad. Another team will scoop him up just to give him a shot as a backup. It's either keep all four or Geno is gone (cut or trade), the next preseason game will tell us everything we need to know. Bowles was a little coy about who was starting so I'm already speculating that they want to keep Petty so they have at least 2 QB's under contract going into next year with all the uncertainty about #FUCKFITZ again and Geno being a hated free agent among the fan base. If Shitzy sucks this year then next year the young guns battle is out and they sign another vet, if he lights it up then we still have Hack for another year as a backup, resign #FUCKFITZ to a 2 year deal (1 voidable) and we still have petty on a leash for another year. By 2018 one of the young guns will either be our starter or we will have a new management/coaching team. What do you think the last PS game will tell us that we don't already know? I think we will get an extended look at Hack. I think we will get to determine our expectations for Hack as well What are we more likely to see? The QB who led the team down the field for a TD in his debut or did the good parts of his debuts happen because he was playing backups and a vanilla defense. Personally, I thought he stared down a few receivers.

You have to move on from Geno at this point, considering he's on the last year of his deal and really hasn't earned a new contract from the Jets. If you cut Petty now and someone picks him up, then lose Geno and Fitz after the season, suddenly Hack is the only QB on the roster. Ugly way to start the offseason. I'm not picking you per say, but this sentiment that (to me) is too much speculation, and not enough insurance for the present. Geno hasn't looked like the guy whom we'd hoped thus far (but neither has Fitz), and to turn the reigns over to Petty is not prudent. Air out a half dozen balls vs back ups is not good enough reason to ditch your 2nd QB whom has started and won games in this league. Had Petty been cleaning up in practice and other phases of the game, maybe there's a discussion there - but he hasn't... and I for one am not prepared to turn over a team ready to chase a SB, over to a project like Petty. Next year is next year. Maybe we extent Fitz, maybe we sign someone else for a year to work with Hack, but we can't throw away our back up because Petty made a few throws.

I have the utmost confidence in Mike M. He will not do anything to jeopardize the future. He knows that not only is this not a SB Championship team this year, but he also knows Geno Smith is in no way the future of this organization, and will be gone next year anyway. Why would he jettison a young, cheap QB with potential to keep a guy who garners no respect from his team mates, and who looks inept every single time he takes the field. If they put Petty on the PS he will be claimed by NE BUF MIA just to spite us, or DAL who is desperate, or any other team in need of a QB immediately. His cold ass will not even have the chance to sit down before he is gone.
Oh and by the way, what is with the disdain for Fitz? I read here all spring how everyone was clamoring for his return, now he sucks? Good lord.

The last poll had Geno favored by a significant majority. You're confusing Geno and Hackenberg. It really doesn't mean a god damn thing if Geno is here next year or not. That has no bearing on whether he's a viable #2 QB to backup Fitz this year. Backups move around the league all the team. That's why they're backups. Quite honestly, nothing you said up there is accurate or makes sense. You're simply fabricating a case for Petty. We've got a project in development - his name is Hackenberg. The only reason to have Petty on this roster is if he was going to be good enough to be the #2. It's not to do with 2017 projections, salaries (both are cheap) or your personal feelings. Can Petty win games against starting NFL defenses THIS year... I'd say i have some serious concerns about him answering the call in november.

OK he might struggle a little more in November but he seems to have the ability to learn which Geno clearly does not. And most importantly he was picked by this regime, which seems to be cleaning out most remnants of Idzik

Funny how the actual article differs from Mehta's tweet. Here is what he wrote in the article: From what he wrote, I am not sure how he concludes that Geno is viewed favorably around the league. But its Mehta, so whatever...

Why is Geno jumping when he tries to throw passes now?
Time to move on.

And most importantly he was picked by this regime, which is clearly cleaning out many remnants of Idzik I think he will though. Forgetting Geno's attitude for a second, I'm just not sold on Petty enough to think he can weather a real storm. If our #1 was legit, with a history of playing 16 healthy games, then that's a different story. Let's break it own; Is Petty the best back up on the roster? Y/NAnswer; no. I don't think he's as far behind as we initially thought, but if Fitz got cold cocked against CIN, Petty would be eaten alive by an starting NFL defense in 2 weeks. That's what I believe. Not saying Geno's rock solid, but Petty is just that green in my opinion. Is Petty a likely candidate to open 2017 as a #1 while Hack is groomed (further)? Y/NAnswer? No. Not on this team, in this city. If Hack isn't ready to fight for #1, there needs to another Fitz type guy around. Macc's regime would face considerable scrutiny with only those 2 on the roster. So if he's not ready to be the #2, and he's not seen as a realistic candidate for #1 duties next year -- what does keeping him on the roster accomplish?Answer: I dunno. That's the real question here. The only thing I can come up with, is that there's real concern that Hackenberg is worse off than Macc anticipated and he's not expected to be better than #3 next year, leaving Petty to elevate to #2... but if that's not wild speculation 12 months ahead of time, i don't know what is... Conclusion: The #2 needs to be able to win games this year. Has to. This roster is too stacked. **these are just the opinions of one man. A great man, but just one nonetheless.

Those ***s tell the story. Thats a great argument if you believe Petty would deliver less than Geno. I truly fear that like Mark before him the ptsd on Geno is simply too much, which is tragic because i love his arm and mobility. He simply looks uncomfortable all the time. To be clear, i am not partial to the view that Geno lacks intelligence or leadership (thought he was a great general at WV). However, his maturity wasnt where it needed to be to start immediately in the nfl and he made a lot of mistakes that might get forgiven in a sevond market city but just dont fly in this town. I hate that this has happened to two qbs of our in a row, but i think Petty has a lot of potential and is just as reasonable a long term project as Hack. Id rather diversify risk with them than let one go to keep Geno and it pains me to say that because i didnt want 7 to go the route of Mark...
