So there is a real possibility that I may get laid off for the first time in my life. I work for a Fortune 500 company, and have been working here for almost 30 years. Hell I started here when I was 18. Our company got a new CIO recently (from outside the company as usual), and he is all about 'reducing overlap'...infrastructure, hardware....and people. A few months ago our director announced his "retirement". He'd always fought tooth and nail for us and we've never lost anyone to layoffs before. So that was a somewhat of a shock, but he's been mailing it in the last few years, and has been very resistant to change, which is pretty hard to do in an IT testing organization. If he was willing to take on more projects for the group we might be in better shape. But we knew his boss liked our group and what we do, so we figured we were safe. The following week we find out he is "retiring" too, so our safety net is pretty much gone. Early this week there is a pretty strong rumor that "massive layoffs" are going to happen in our organization on Monday. Sure enough, there are several conference rooms booked by 'HR' on several floors next week. Our boss is pretty up front with us on a lot of stuff, so we asked him about it. He basically confirmed it, but is not allowed to say anything. When pressed, he said he can't really say anything but has said it will affect our group. We can tell he hasn't been the same this week. He's a great guy and a great boss, despite being a Steelers fan. I'd like to think that I'm safe as I've always gotten good reviews, never call in sick, work 10-12 hour days everyday....but we're all just names on an org chart at this point. Fuck. Loooking at all the app start ups and Big Internet companies...with a strong testing background you can go in any direction? I am sure this will work out for you. Maybe pitch for a remote-consultancy position and get back to funny pics. Good luck to the best guy on the internet.

I've been laid off two or three times, not after being at one job for 30 years tho. That's really fucked up ... hopefully it doesn't happen to you. Do you have some sort of retirement? These days those mother fuckers will cut people before they get their tenure and that is the lowest form of evil.
Basically good luck. I'm sure if it happens tho your have no problem getting another job. You sound like a hard worker. That counts for something.

we have a national sales force of independent reps and we're looking to hire 80 by the end of the year. independent meaning you'd be a 1099. we're actually showing preference to people without sales experience rather than seasoned sales veterans, because training people for our sales process is easier when you're not trying to retrain someone with set ways. it's in the industrial/manufacturing space, but you don't need experience in that either because your sales process is supported by our application engineers who understand all that. 110 year old company. pm if interested. I'll keep it in mind, but people, sales, and me are definitely not a good fit. I know myself all too well.

Well I can't even say it's one job - in a big company there are just so many vastly different jobs, and I've held quite a few different ones, so it's kept things from getting stale. Finally in a good groove now with a great boss and pretty normal co-workers, I'd hate for us to get split up or worse, get potentially rolled into another team...actually the worst would be losing our jobs to India.

You in IT? If so I'm assuming programming because typically they wouldn't outsource an operations guy like networking admin or data admin.

Sorry to hear this, honestly every company is looking to get "younger" these days and they make no bones about it. Good luck with your new entitled millennials who have no idea of the definition of hard work and earning your spot.
All that being said Fish you might be able to crush it as a consultant with your vast wealth of knowledge and experience. If your wife can get the insurance this could be an opportunity to make more dough on your own terms. I'm hoping for the best for you.

30 years is a good run, unusually long in this day and age, well done.
Thing is you said you are putting in 10 to 12 hours days and that is fucked uped, kids grow to fast, and your job is stealing 2 to 4 hours a day of your family time, like I say , that's fucked up.
Polish up the resume and find something better now before the corporate fuck heads force you out or even worse continue to work the long hours for the good of the company.
Working long hours is what we do to set our selves up for a better situation, like the fishhook web site/business, revisit that and reconsider what it would take to make that fly. And not having a clue what you actually do, I would encourage you to try to make a go as a consultant/contract worker, maybe start it as a side job in your free time and try to roll it into a full time gig. Pay is often less working for your self, especially starting out, but everything becomes a right off, internet, phone, car, spare bedroom/office, TV's, with the right offs and savings in taxes you should break even out of the gate.
Confidence, and if you do decide to interview, go in polite but cocky, turn the tables and interview them, no one likes the desperate. You got this buddy.

Good luck Fish. Some years back I made it through many rounds of cuts for a company I was with for 15+ years.
The company became stable and all was good, I had one issue, our comapny was for sale and prior to that sale there was this VP that had gotten completely irate with me in front of everyone. I let his tantrum go but it was heard by all and made it into HR. This guy got reprimanded and made to oppliligize to me in front of the executive president of the comapny. A year later the sale of the company takes place and this ass clown is made Pres of my div, yep, I am out the door.
If they are not getting rid of the complete department, you are a hard worker and not resistant to change, most important, not resistant to change, you should be good. I find only thing that gets a hard worker let go is if his pay is way above the rest of the departments pay or they simply want to flush out the old blood.

Good luck my Fishy friend, lets all hope this round passes you (personally) by.
There but for the grace of the Flying Spaghetti Monster go we all these days. You'd think 30 years (or in my own case 16) would buy us some security. Lolnope.
Remember my friend, we're always hiring down here in D.C., the Government can eat as many people as we can feed it, and it (unlike for most of us) pays well AND gives good security.
Be nice to have a few extra Jets fans down here too, me and Crusher could show you the town (or at least where the fat guys eat).
Good luck man, good luck. I'll be thinking of you Monday. Naked. With Oil.

Good luck on Monday Fish. Thoughts and prayers are with you. Should it come to pass on Monday, just know that you're starting a journey that will work out for you in the end. I just got through a stretch of being out of work for 3.5 months. Thankfully that's over now. Get your resume in order and start calling your contacts this weekend.
