So there is a real possibility that I may get laid off for the first time in my life. I work for a Fortune 500 company, and have been working here for almost 30 years. Hell I started here when I was 18.
Our company got a new CIO recently (from outside the company as usual), and he is all about 'reducing overlap'...infrastructure, hardware....and people.
A few months ago our director announced his "retirement". He'd always fought tooth and nail for us and we've never lost anyone to layoffs before. So that was a somewhat of a shock, but he's been mailing it in the last few years, and has been very resistant to change, which is pretty hard to do in an IT testing organization. If he was willing to take on more projects for the group we might be in better shape.
But we knew his boss liked our group and what we do, so we figured we were safe.
The following week we find out he is "retiring" too, so our safety net is pretty much gone.
Early this week there is a pretty strong rumor that "massive layoffs" are going to happen in our organization on Monday.
Sure enough, there are several conference rooms booked by 'HR' on several floors next week. Our boss is pretty up front with us on a lot of stuff, so we asked him about it.
He basically confirmed it, but is not allowed to say anything. When pressed, he said he can't really say anything but has said it will affect our group. We can tell he hasn't been the same this week. He's a great guy and a great boss, despite being a Steelers fan.
I'd like to think that I'm safe as I've always gotten good reviews, never call in sick, work 10-12 hour days everyday....but we're all just names on an org chart at this point.
Fuck.

It sucks but you have to look on the brightside - are you REALLY a good employee? Better, smarter than others? Because if yes, you should be able to find a job relatively quickly... the workforce is FILLED with fucking slackers. And you may make better money. The economy is not that bad (unless you're blue collar) - white collar jobs are booming.

The job market has gotten brutal. I had a friend of mine that worked at IBM since he got out of college. About 10 years ago he got offered another job but he told me he didn't want to leave IBM because it was such a great company and he had been with them so long. Several years back, they announced layoffs. He got let go and to make things worse, his wife also worked for IBM but was on maternity leave. The day she came back, she was out the door. So many companies these days have absolutely no loyalty to their employees.
Good luck Fish. Hope they keep you.

That sucks man. Good luck. Does your wife work? Yeah she does, same company actually. Completely different division though so she's safe. Edit. Just read crossfire's post. Dammit.

That sucks... good luck.
Ive been in the same place for a bunch of years and through two acquisitions. Its always nerve wracking since to the new guys at the top, you are just a name on the org chart at times.
Years ago my whole group was over goal, and they laid off two of us to reduce head count. Go figure. "Great year, now GTFO"

Get your resume updated ASAP, Fish. Don't wait, just in case. I lost a month when I was laid off because mine wasn't updated and looked like shit. Paid a professional resume writer $400 to update mine and my LinkedIn profile. Totally worth it.
