We played the same schedule as everyone else in our division less two games as we played the 2013 2nd place teams in the AFC South and North being TEN & PIT. This changes next season as we play the AFC South, NFC East with two uncommon opponents as the 4th place finisher which means we get OAK & CLE for our efforts. There's no mystery to the balanced scheduling as it's cyclical.
The only question was the succession of teams we faced that had above-average QB's all faced early in the season. But returning Milliner, selecting Pryor and having two others in Patterson and McDougle were supposed to remedy that impact. Turns out we lost all 3 CB's. Them's the breaks. And John tried to get Vontae Davis. I think our season in retrospect swung in the balance of that signing attempt. We need an aggressive GM to fill the many holes on this team. Not simply a bean-counter or a GM limited as a scout-personnel guy but someone of the ilk of Tannenbaum who can negotiate and land prized FA's. That was his strength and it's been missed dearly. You cannot rebuild or even reload teams simply throught the draft. A solid GM is worth his weight in gold in the NFL.

BUF and MIA outperformed expectations which accounts for a big part of that. BUF was probably projected to win 5-6 games and they won 9 for example, which counts 2x in those calculations.

They did us a favor. That 6 game stretch exposed Rex and Idzik and made yesterday possible. How did it expose Rex? Was it his fault that our former dumbass GM failed to provide him the players, especially CBs, needed for his defensive schemes to work? If Izdick was slightly competent at his former job, and VaGeno not turning the ball over like a baby drinking milk, the Jets probably win some of those games. So let me look at this, Rex had us in several of those games in a position to win: GB, CHI, Det, Den, NE. We all knew going into the season that our secondary was a HUGE problem. Please, let's not rewrite history. That was all on Izdick, not Rex. That's why Izdick left NY yesterday just releasing a statement. He knew he fvcked up big time as a GM. I have been having this same conversation with you for like two years. It all boils down to that I give Rex more blame for personnel then you do. It really doesn't depend how you slice it. Some thought he had to much say with Tanny and then there are the reports that he was basically an ornament in the personnel meeting under Idzik. Either way it is bad. And if Rex is supposed to be a defensive genius how about he comes up with a scheme to help make up for deficiencies rather than running 0 blitzes and leaving our horseshit corners on islands all the time? Or leaving an injured Milliner on an island with Nelson? THE ONE FUCKING PLAYER WE KNEW NOT TO LET BEAT US HAD OVER 200 FUCKING YARDS!!! How does your hero let that happen? And Woody hinted on all that stuff yesterday. Called them "mysteries". The fans could see it, the billionaire supposed idiot owner could see it but the genius couldn't.

Not sure what you are talking about. I guess it is the glass is half-filled theory (based on your perspective). I give Rex tremendous credit for a defense that outperformed given the variables, especially at the CB position. How we were even in those games is beyond me? We all watched and it was certainly not due to our sad offense. As for Woody hinting at it yesterday, nice try. I am on holiday vacation and watched his entire press conference live at 8am on SNY yesterday. His reference about the GB game had nothing to do with the defense. He clearly questioned the offensive play calling at the end of the first half with the bone-headed decision to throw the ball inside the 10 instead of running it when we were up 21-3. That one play, as I have stated numerous times, imo ended our season! it was all downhill from there -- thanks VaGeno! We all saw it and so too did our billionaire owner.

If Rex was so great and Woody wasn't talking about him then why was he fired?
That play ended our season? GB had to drive 97 yards after that. Shame Rex couldn't work out one of his many miracles then. Seems he always runs out of miracles and genius in the 2 minute drill.

You cannot rebuild or even reload teams simply throught the draft. A solid GM is worth his weight in gold in the NFL. I assume you realize that Tannenbaum's negotiating skills involved paying a guy more than anyone else was willing to pay him. By all accounts, he never landed one player that was offered one dollar more by any other organization. He consistently overpaid and he put us into salary cap hell. Negotiating skill with a salary cap is identifying the true value of a player and comparing that to his market value. If true value exceed market value and the player is a fit for the organization, you buy. If not, you go to the next guy. Idzik erred the other way in that he couldn't find anyone whose true value to the organization exceeded his market value in his mind. The few he did find, he was wrong about, although the jury is still out on some. Its a overly conservative approach that won't work any more than Tannenbaum's overyly liberal approach. Need to find someone who is the happy medium.

The teams we played were scheduled by a fixed formula. We would have played those teams regardless of the order. The NFL definitely designs when games are played to maximize television revenue per game and to keep as many teams in the hunt for the playoffs for as long as possible. The NFL would lose a pile of cash if most of the playoff schedule was locked up mid-season.
In our case it appears that the schedule makers knew we played a group of teams almost certain to be playoff contenders and a group of teams unlikely to get anywhere near the playoffs. Our playoff opportunities looked not so good for this year so they front-loaded our schedule with teams that would likely beat us (minus OAK) to ensure people in NY would watch/attend the game. (Who would have watched DEN or KC demolish us at the end of this season?) Either we were going to be demoralized after the first half of the season or we would be the team to rebound and go on a winning streak at the end of the season.
Had our schedule been more even handed I do not believe we would have been more successful. Maybe 5-6 wins but that wouldn't have gotten us anything better than where we are right now.
