It bears remembering that Hackenberg is still just 21 years old. I have no opinion on his talent level, but he's still at an age where progress can happen.

However, Petty turns 26 in May, which in my view is far too old to be a QB project. Why Petty was drafted as a 24 year old project QB totally escapes me.

Because they're the Jets ... and their drafts, for the most part, suck.

I agree - it was a very odd pick. 24 year old rookie QBs are fine if they are ready to play. But you can't draft a 24 year old 3-year project in round 4. Should have taken Brett Hundley if we were set on a QB there. 3 years younger, so more time to develop, but also far more experienced in a pro-style scheme.

IMO the Jets should have been significantly convinced that Hackenberg could develop into an NFL starter if they were taking him just 1 year after taking Petty. Unless after 12 months of watching Petty they new he was a bust, why take another project QB? I would think you either have to be convinced that Petty is unsalvageable OR that Hack is a dynamite prospect to go back-to-back like that.
If Maccagnan drafts another QB it's his last shot and it also means the exit of either Petty or Hack. We're not keeping 4 QBs again and there's no doubt a Vet is going to be signed.

Going into next year, Petty will get more love, warmth and understanding from Coach. That type of treatment can change a player; change a QB prospect into a hungry teammate that's always cutting wood, cutting wood. I am optimistic!

in respect to Hack...i remember the tired excuse that Geno wasn't ready...so if the Jets think its wise to hold Hack i don't see any issue...i could also see Petty winning the job and seeing what we got and have Hack watch for another year... geno wasn't ready after 3 seasons and we nothing about his4th because he was injured. imo hack wasn't drafted to sit this season. it sounds like the jets wanted fitz to start off this season and then bring in hack halfway through. you never know. that may still be the plan although fitz really made the second year complicated. and much as people want to blame fiyz for last season, the simple fact is it's a team sport and they just weren't very good on any side of the ball. you just have to look at the tackles for a loss stat for the dline to see that wilk and sheldon weren't showing up.

did russia hackenberg the jets? you can't prove that they didn't Maybe Russia doesn't want the jets to be good and they made Macc draft the worst QB in the history of football because they had a pee tape of woody. Make the jets great, well not again, cause they never were, but make the jets mediocre again at least. God that team I hate sux.
