The big negative about firefighting is the usual danger but also the danger of inhaled chemicals. Despite advancement in equipment, so many guys end up retiring early with severe breathing problems.

Go with firefighter. If you choose paint technician you'll be cooped up in a factory all day. It's just in a hanger at the airport but I know what you mean. I know firefighter is a more sexy job but it's not a time served apprenticeship skill like the paint tech role, and the pay reflects that.
