CAJON PASS >> Cellphone footage captured a tractor trailer dragging a red sedan along the northbound lanes of the 15 Freeway and the driver of the car frantically trying to signal the truck driver after the Nissan became wedged onto the rear of the larger vehicle Wednesday afternoon.
Shortly before 3:30 p.m., Pete Edward Maestas, 62, Bakersfield was hauling two trailers filled with 50,000 pounds of carrots through the Cajon Pass just north of Highway 138, according to a California Highway Patrol release.
As Maestas came upon a slower moving tractor trailer, he began changing lanes to his left, according to officials. As he did that, a Nissan Maxima, driven by Javier A. Diaz Jr., 34, of Oak Hills was already in that lane and the two vehicles collided.
The Nissan became lodged underneath the truck trailer which continued driving along dragging the Nissan for nearly three-quarters of a mile.
• Video: Truck drags car on 15 Freeway - and rig’s driver doesn’t appear to know what is happening
In a video circulated on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, the truck can be seen dragging the sedan that became attached to the rig’s rear driver’s side.
Several drivers, including Diaz, can be heard honking their horns at the larger vehicle trying to get Maestas to pull over.
“He’s not stopping,” Diaz called out to the man filming the incident.
Maestas was apparently unaware that he was dragging an automobile until the man making the video speeds up to tell him.
Officer’s arrived on scene and did not detect any signs of impairment on the truck driver and did a preliminary examination of the his log book, which appeared to be in compliance, CHP officials.
Maestas was allowed to drive away from the scene.
Neither driver was transported to a hospital.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call the San Bernardino CHP Area office at 909-383-4247.
