His salary is now fully guaranteed -- time to cut him would have been in February before the 5th year option kicked in. If we can't get a conditional 2018 pick for him, I assume he will be on the roster this season.

The one positive of this is that Shelly will likely engage in clean living and play his ass off this year in order to get $$ as a free agent.

We don't need anyone playing there asses off to win meaningless games this year. Especially someone who has no future with the team.

I understand your point and thought someone would express that point of view. I agree if the tank is on, then you don't want any over achievers knocking the team out of a high draft pick. However, I think Jet fans are in for a disappointment this year as far as a high draft pick. I don't think Bowles will tank the season nor would any respectable coach who wants to stay in the league. In saying this and looking at the schedule, it's pretty weak. The QB position is in question the running backs are the same as last year, the O line is about the same and minus Marshall, the WR and TE are the same or possibly improved with Decker back. The defense as a whole appears to have slightly improved and the young linebackers getting better. My point is, I don't think the Jets will be very good, but they are not a 2 - 3 win team. They will win 4 - 8 games thus knocking them out of getting a top 3 QB, unless they further mortgage the future and trade up and sweeten the pot with some high 2019 draft picks. As far as Sheldon overachieving, I think he will to get paid. However, doesn't that give the Jets a higher compensation pick if they lose him? This is only my opinion and after typing this and going on record, the Jets will probably win 2 games. I'm looking forward to see how the season pans out.

Would be nice to see the Jets trade him for a conditional 4th that could become a 3rd in 2018.
But, could the Jets actually do better if he gets a good FA deal somewhere? What would the compensatory pick look like?

The highest comp pick you can get is a 3rd rounder.

The highest comp pick you can get is a 3rd rounder. Yeah but you know one of these years the Pats will get a 2nd round comp pick. Likely two of them. _
