Lol Nick Marshall thought the worst thing he'd be doing this year was sitting out the first 4 games for PED use.

That is exactly what we DON'T need. We don't need anyone playing there asses off to win meaningless games this year. Especially someone who has no future with the team. However, doesn't that give the Jets a higher compensation pick if they lose him? No, compensatory picks are awarded based on who you lose vs who you add, and the highest is a 3rd rounder the following season. Best we could hope for is a 3rd in 2019, if he leaves and we sign no one of note in 2018. Chances of that latter part happening being slim to none, as there will be cap space and I get the feeling they will be spending on the OL in FA to protect whatever young QB is the future.

Would be nice to see the Jets trade him for a conditional 4th that could become a 3rd in 2018. But, could the Jets actually do better if he gets a good FA deal somewhere? What would the compensatory pick look like?Kinda sorta. Teams that have lost more or better compensatory free agents than they signed in the previous year receive picks somewhere in the third through seventh rounds. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the others. So yeah, the higher he signs for, the higher the comp pick COULD be. But theres a lot of variables, including who we sign as FAs. Could be as high as an end of 3rd round pick or as low as a 7th. A conditional 4th, that could become a 3rd, is probably a better deal, certainly less risky.

I'm not sure we are going to get a comp pick for Richardson. Jets are currently at 57 million in cap space for 2017 and, with a couple of obvious cuts, are going to be closer to 70 million. We are going to be active in FA next year.
We need to get whatever we can for Sheldon this point. He's not a part of this team's future.
