A lot has been made of the Idzik 12 as a missed opportunity in 2014 and one of the worst drafts in team history. But what about Maccagnan's free agency spending spree of 2015. We came into that offseason with over $50MM cap space. And Macc spent it. All of it. And what do we have to show for that off-season spending spree. In total, we acquired 28 players in March and April of 2015 -- between the start of free agency and the draft. 28 players which includes re-signing some of our own FAs/RFAs, unrestricted free agents and players acquired through trade. He has torn it down and burned it to the ground. Here they are, the Maccagnan 28:
Unrestricted Free Agents (15):
Antonio Cromartie Buster Skrine
Corey Hilliard
Darrelle Revis
Erin Henderson
Jamari Lattimore
James Brewer James Carpenter
Joe Mays
Kellen Davis
Kevin Vickerson
Marcus Gilchrist
Ronald Talley
Steven Bowen Stevan Ridley
Re-signed FA/RFA/Extended (9)
Ben Ijalana Bilal Powell
Damon Harrison David Harris Jaiquawn Jarrett Leger Douzable Quinton Coples (Exercised Option) Tanner Purdum
Willie Colon
Acquired in Trade (4)
Brandon Marshall Ryan Fitzpatrick Zac Stacy Devier Posey
After two seasons, what do we have to show for that offseason spending spree: A starting guard, a nickel corner, a back-up RB, a back-up OT and a long snapper (Tanner Purdum). 2 seasons later, that is all that is left from a $50MM+ investment. Assuming Macc is going to be here for the "build" part of the re-build, I sure hope he can get it right this time around, based on his track record, lets just say I am skeptical.
Edit: Just realized that I forgot Zac Stacy and Devier Posey who were acquired in draft day trades in 2015.

Can't underestimate the long snapper. If you don't know his name, that's a good thing.

Can't underestimate the long snapper. If you don't know his name, that's a good thing. Don't disrespect the long snapper. That is the longest tenured guy on the team and the only player on the roster to have played in a postseason game as a Jet.

Biggest mistakes were Revis and Cromartie. And I don't think anyone expected Revis to drop off as hard as he did. Though still a bad contract.
Jets are a bad team, so what we've seen is them throwing darts at left overs who need a job and hoping something clicks. Until they're more respected and can actually win games, free agency is gonna be a rough ride. Even if they wanted a big name they'd probably have to throw a huge contract at them putting the rest of the roster in a bad place.
GM of this team is not fun.

The drafting has been arguably worse. I'm going to post something on it tonight.

Absolutely incredible. Couple that with the lack of draft success, it's astonishing. You need to post this in JN... throwing a steak into the tiger pit.

The drafting has been arguably worse. I'm going to post something on it tonight. It's simple, if you don't draft well it is exponentially harder to have success in this league. It's safe to say that the Jets haven't drafted well in the past decade.

Being GM of the Jets is about as fun as being President of the US. More than half the people hate you no matter who you are. I agree on Revis. This coming season is the one where he should have started to slow down, not fallen off a cliff last year. If he played well (say a Top 20 starting CB) in 2016 and then started to decline now the contract wouldn't look so bad. I don't think anyone expected him to have the season he did last year.

Hard to evaluate that without comparing it to other GM signings. How many free agents are still on their team 3 years later? Plus, how many of those contracts were constructed to allow the team the freedom to cut the player after 2 seasons? This is really not something you can evaluate based on a list alone.

It's safe to say that the Jets haven't drafted well in the past decade. 2007 was our last decent draft... how sad. But we did get Kyle Burnt Toast Wilson . Precisely. And we had back-to-back good drafts in 2006 and 2007. That and some very good veteran FA aquisitions is what enabled us to get to the championship game twice without a premiere QB. Our busts in 2008 and 2009 and 2010 didnt really manifest themselves until 2011 and beyond. That is when you expect those players to emerge as the foundation. Once the veterans were purged and Revis got injured there wasnt anything left. And now you have 6 years without a playoff birth and unquestionably the worst roster in the league on paper.
