Koalas in Australia Need Mittens for Their Burned Paws: Here’s How You Can Help
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is encouraging anyone who knows how to sew to help make mittens for koalas that were badly injured in Australia this week.
According to The Telegraph, the koalas were hurt when fast-moving wildfires spread through the states of South Australia and Victoria. Because the animals are slow-moving and live high up in the trees, many of them burned their paws trying to escape. The koala in the above photo, named Jeremy, is receiving treatment for his second-degree burns.
“Koalas urgently need your help. Please cut out our pattern and get your friends to get sewing too,” IFAW said in a message on Facebook. The group also said they expect many more injured koalas to need treatment in the coming days.
To help the koalas, use this downloadable pattern to sew mittens out of 100 percent cotton sheets or tea towels, which are soft enough for their burned paws. Mittens can be mailed to: IFAW at 6 Belmore Street, Surry Hills 2010 in New South Wales, Australia. If you can’t sew, the Australian Marine Wildlife Research Rescue Organization, another group helping to treat the koalas, is accepting donations.
