Former San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Jeremiah Attaochu has signed with the New York Jets, according to a tweet from his agency SportsTrust Advisors.
Attaochu visited the Jets on Sunday, one day after being somewhat surprisingly released from the 49ers during 53-man roster cuts. He signed a one-year deal with the 49ers in March worth up to $5.1 million with $2.5 million guaranteed and a $1.5 million signing bonus with the intent of adding a boost to their LEO position, which is the primary pass rushing position in the 49ers defense. But despite still having a perceived need in that area and the guaranteed money they gave him at signing, the 49ers decided they didn't see enough from Attaochu during the preseason to keep him around.
"Jerry was a guy we were excited (about), unfortunately, due to some injuries during camp, we just didn't get that many opportunities to correctly evaluate him," general manager John Lynch said during a conference call Saturday, per 49ers.com. "When you go into the regular season, dependability in terms of knowing a guy is going to be out there is important, and we just didn't have that feeling. We made a tough decision but one we felt we had to."
Attaochu, 25, is in his fifth NFL season after being selected by the Chargers in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Georgia Tech. He played 11 games as a rookie in 2014, totaling 10 tackles and two sacks, then saw his role increase in 2015 as he had 55 tackles and six sacks in 15 games (12 starts). Injuries got the best of Attaochu in 2016 as he was limited to eight games due to a sprained ankle and a broken foot and finished with 11 tackles and two sacks on the season.
The injury bug plagued Attaochu again before the 2017 season as he fought hamstring issues during the offseason and training camp. He wound up playing in just four games last season, totaling seven tackles while spending much of the season as a healthy scratch.
Attaochu's 31.5 career sacks at Georgia Tech stands as a school record and as of 2014 was fifth in ACC history, while at his Pro Day in 2014 he ran 4.58 in the 40 with a 37.5 inch vertical jump. He had a standout season as a senior at Georgia Tech in 2013, when he totaled 45 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks on route to being named second-team all-conference, and also put up strong numbers as a junior in 2012, racking up 69 tackles, 10 sacks and 12 tackles for loss.
In his brief time with the 49ers, Attaochu had two tackles and one sack during preseason games. He'll provide some depth at the outside linebacker position in New York, where Jordan Jenkins and Josh Martin are listed as starters.
