The rules are what they are. I do not believe the officials did their job in enforcing them on these eligibility substitution plays but it also appears that NE intentionally made illegal substitutions and then ran around bragging about it after the fact. I would have to disagree on the word "substitutions", they merely changed the designations. If the Ravens can't react in the time allowed by the rules, that's on them. The rules disagree with you. A designation as eligible/ineligible by an otherwise eligible receiver is a substitution. The rules specifically state that failing to make the proper designation is an illegal substitution. It can't be an illegal substitution if the designation is not a substitution under the rule. The rules further require the defense be given an opportunity to make their own substitutions upon learning of the eligibility designation--the substitution--from the refs. That did not happen there and you can tell by the players on defense still shifting when the snap occurs that they were not given sufficient opportunity to make substitutions. You can't seriously argue that any team can make player substitutions in the ten seconds the Ravens had before the snap. If you are going to seriously argue that then perhaps you can show some video examples where that occurs.

The rule itself may need to be adjusted, but until it is, smart teams should take advantage of it. Thats why the NFL come out today and explained why it was legal.

That's a great point. Lots of great coaches and players - both past and current. None ever had this stench of rule-breaking and bending hanging around them - at least in the NFL. You would think there'd be some kind of coaches/football code of conduct, unwritten "rules" that everyone plays by. I can't imagine how the rest of the league feels about Homeless Hoodie and his ill gotten 'wins'. There is. It's called sportsmanship. Players on the field play in the gray areas all the time. That's expected. You get away with what you can...hoping the prying eyes of the officials don't notice. But for a coach to constantly find and use loopholes to win? It's low. Sleeveless hoodie is to coaches what ambulance chasing lawyers are to the bar.

You ALL know it deep down... And that is why you will ALWAYS be stained. ALWAYS. Your rings just don't count quite as much as everyone else's. Everyone knows this as fact, not opinion. It must be hard, but that's the life of a cheater. Deep down you will always know... In this case everyone else knows too. And they are all LOLing behind your back.

From tuck rule ridiculousness to flat out cheating to having star serial murderer gang banger WR....now back to more ridiculous rule exploitation we've come full circle.
Guess it's an improvement that they've found their relative moral compass again.
Crown them now.

I can't get enough of the tradition of Harbaugh crying after a loss to the Patriots in the playoffs. It's not Billy Cundiff's fault that he kicked a potential game-tying FG like (as FF2 would say) Stephen Hawking. No, it's the Patriots' fault for messing with the scoreboard. It's not his fault for deciding to give up easy yardage to the Patriots and then take a 15 yard penalty rather than taking a timeout to get his team's shit together. No, it's the Patriots' fault for trying to trick him. This is a team that's more than happy to take advantage of technicalities in the rules when it benefits them (see the Elvis Dumervil signing) and then is the first to cry foul when things don't work out for them. Mmmm . . . yummy Ravens tears.

So Pats cheat again to win, the refs helped them do it, and Patdell was in the stands to make sure it all happened....
Shocking!!!
