Out of the 8 teams remaining in the playoffs this weekend (NE, Balt, Indy, Denver, GB, Dallas, Sea, Carolina), 5 of those teams were quarterbacked by guys who already have Super Bowl rings.
As of this post (about 2PM Eastern on Sunday), there are 3 teams in the Final Four (NE, GB, Sea) and all of the quarterbacks are previous SB winners with a combined 5 rings. IF Denver wins, the Super Bowl will be GUARANTEED to have a repeat winner at quarterback, even though we don't know either of the teams in the game.
It's not a news flash that the NFL is a quarterback league, but it's never been more apparent. So my question is simply this, how important is the Coach if you don't have a great quarterback? Who was the last coach to drag a subpar QB to a Super Bowl victory? I can only think of two teams in the past 40 years, both of whom had amazing defenses and great running games (Tampa Bay with Brad Johnson and Baltimore with Trent Dilfer).
My opinion is that we still have not put enough attention on the QB position for the Jets. You have to move heaven and earth to get a guy you think could be "the one." Whether that means trading the ranch for somebody, trading up in the Draft, or drafting a QB every single season until you're confident you have the guy, you do it. It just seems like such a no-brainer at this point, that it's IMPOSSIBLE to win a SB without a great QB, that if you don't have one then you take a gamble in every draft trying to get one.
We will continue to change GMs, head coaches, offensive coordinators, etc. but it won't matter....until we have a true Top 10 QB. Because if you don't have one of those guys you're not winning the Super Bowl, it just seems like a fact.

This is pretty much it.
You dont have a top QB then you will not succeed. Not in today's NFL.

So if there's even a 50% chance that Mariotta is a franchise QB would you trade your #1, #2, #3 and next year's #1 for him? I might. That's simply how frustrated I am that even with a good coach, a great defense, a decent running game the Jets simply have a 0.0% chance to win the whole thing unless they have a Top 10 signal caller.

I only do that kind of a trade for once in a generation prospect, not Mariotta......

Yes and no. It is the most important yet worst scouted, coached and developed position in football. There are a lot of reasons for that but we could be here forever discussing that.
We probably won't win a SB until we find a great one but there is a ton of middle ground between the Mannnings, Lucks and Rodgers of the world and what we have had. IMO some decent coaching, and supporting casts can at least make the team watchable and competitive on offense.
And having a functional ownership-GM-HC dynamid will also help a lot. I think we didn't have that the past couple of years.

What exactly have SparklePony and Peyton won recently? And Brees and Rodgers haven't had great success in the playoffs in recent years. Amazingly enough, the QB isn't the only player that matters. A complete team clicking at the right time is much more important, it would seem, to postseason success. Obviously, having a top notch QB makes things easier, but it is certainly no guarantee of success. If it were, the likes of Eli and Flacco wouldn't have Superbowl rings. And, if you even want to put Luck into the elite category, what the hell have the Colts done with him? Win a shitty division by default only to inevitably get tossed out on their asses in the playoffs? If that's success, I want no part of it.

If you have the right coaches, you have a better chance of developing the marginal prospects to be pretty good players. Think of guys like Romo, Dalton, Foles, Ryan as examples... Guys who are not HOF material but can help your team win football games... That is the type of QB you need if you can't find the pure franchise type... A good coaching staff can develop these guys. Heck, Drew Brees was just above average while he was a Charger.

Well we at least need someone who knows how to run an Offense.

Not necessarily. Good coaches (like John Harbaugh, Tomlin, Carroll and Coughlin) can win a Super Bowl with very good-great quarterbacks. You also need a good coach (or coaches) to properly develop the quarterback. Only once in a generation type prospects need little to no development and be successful.
Mediocre coaches (like Smith and Turner) can only ride their quarterbacks for so long until it catches up with them.

Romo undrafted, Wilson third round, brady 6th round. You don't need the first pick.

If a player like Luck or Manning comes out, and I'm the gm, you bet your bottom dollar I'm mortgaging the immediate future with a rg3 type deal. Look what the Colts did, lost almost certainly on purpose just to get Luck and now they're set for the next 15 years again.

No. As long as we're saddled with Tebows and Sanchezs and Smiths, you could bring in Landry, Walsh and Lombardi into your staff and not make the playoffs.
