I feel the use of tribe names isn't a big deal at all as there's an implied honorific associated with them (no one is going to use a name they think isn't cool/badass). With that said, the Redskins don't have a leg to stand on. Their name is a slang term used for an enemy, no different than calling the Japanese 'nips' during WW2. The name should go, and should've been gone at the same time St. John's got rid of the slightly less obvious slur 'redmen.' Pretty sure there have been polls and the majority of Indians don't have a problem with the name. Paleface. Which means the moonshine chugging prairie folk are too dumb to understand, so the white liberals will make everything right on their behalf. |

Paleface. 2016 Washington Post phone poll of 504 people showed 10% or so were offended. 2019 web poll of 500 people showed 32% were offended. 2020 UC Berkley study showed over 50% were offended. So like any poll, depends on who you talk to. Id hazard a guess that most Native Americans today have more important things to worry about than the name of a football team in Washington DC. Like anything, money talks. You know who will love a name change/rebranding? Mitchell and Ness. Lots of classic jerseys will sell if they change the logo. As for a new name... Washington Hogs? Or Washington Warthogs if you like alliteration. |
