i was around 11 years old riding bikes with my friends on hicksville road in plainedge when a speeding hot rod drifted into the shoulder where we were and clipped my handlebar, took a tumble but his rear tire just missed me
standing under the red-top dry cleaner sign when i was around 13, it was during a massive winter storm and me and my buddy were watching the sign slam against the pole in the wind, because the bolts on teh bottom had broken off. huge metal ass sign with neon, the way they used to build them. hadda be 350 lbs. easy. anyhoo we got bored with watching it and started walking away, the second we did, SNAP BOOM, fucking thing landed right where we were just standing. landed in our footprints in the snow
working consruction when i was like 19, we were doing a dormer on some house in garden city, standing on a steep pitched garage roof, 2 stories up and beneath that was the cement stairwll to the cellar entrance. some dickhead momback had leaned a 2 x 10 rafter against the peak of the existing house above us. fucking lumber caught a breeze and started falling right toward my head -- woulda conked me, i woulda fell off the 2 story high roof and fell into the cement cellar stairwell. my brother yelled just in time for me to duck, hit me in the ducking shoulder instead of the noggin, got hurt but lived to drink another day
one time when i was like 46 and left my browser open without clearing my search history and my wife found it.
what you guys got, any close calls? i mean besides ragu with the swiss cheese liver thing

Sledding in Rockland when i was like 8.
Best friend and i were flying down a hill on a Toboggan, towards a swing set. Not a little one, a Giant one with metal swings etc.
We were headed for it. No way to avoid.
We ducked.
Somehow we emerged from going thru it without hitting anything
That and the Ghosts on the Golf Course.

I was about 10,riding my bike on the sidewalk. Guy is backing his car out of the driveway. He's got huge boxwood's in front of his house that end virtually where the driveway meets the sidewalk so he's basically driving blind every time he backs out.
As I'm passing the end of the boxwoods, blam, he hits me, I hit the ground and he finally stops with the bike and me underneath his gas tank, my head next to his rear right wheel. He jumps out, says "jeez kid you oK" while dragging me by the elbow to my home. He tells my parents what happened. They say thanks, he leaves, then my mother slaps me across the face and says "be careful next time".
Then about 100 times at work that would bore everyone....
which I would repeat again in a second before re-living my mother slapping me for almost getting killed.
Thanks for bringing back those memories Shakin.
Thanks.

Icy high school afternoon; took the LIRR tracks to the ... who cares. Foot slides and I tumble onto the tracks, head just missing the 3rd rail.
Strippers getting that perfume all over my cheap ass. I took a beating because I couldn't take the hysteria.
On my birthday, one month after Son2 arrives, wife says "whaddya want"
"How about that movie with Madonna, "Truth or Dare"?
"is that a knife?"

There was this Big Brother thread...
Found myself going backward in my Silverado on winter back roads in the Adirondacks. Sliding toward a large boulder thinking this was it as the boulder got closer to me/driver side door at about 50mph. Got lucky and hit a ditch that flipped the truck upside down and came to rest about 5 feet short of the boulder. Truck totaled and we all walked away....and never drove a chevy again.

Wifene sweeping kitchen floor. I walk by towards Refer t get beer. Wifene working me over verbally (me not listening). I get beer, pull off cap, toss on floor in her sweeping pile. Only spent a couple of weeks in hospital with tricky surgery getting the broom out of my ass.

A close second was crossing the Atlantic to see a football game for which I had no ticket, but some dude I met I the internet said he had it. He told me to meet him at the news kiosque in Grand Central Station. He'd the sweaty guy with an O'brien jersey.

Oh, so it was the Chevy's fault. Backstory: they had a recall on shitty brake systems. Nearly ran over a kid a week before in a parking lot due to failure. Day before my wreck they replaced both front hub assemblies. Driving down the road I saw a slight amount of slush on road. Noticed my auto track 4wd had been switched off. I normally had auto track in always but it must have been turned off during the warranty work the day before. Anyhoo...i pressed the autotrack button and it seemed as though the front passenger tire locked up immediately. Spun the truck around according to the drag from the wheel (seemingly). This was on a long straightaway with no turns or jerky steering involved. My theory is this: ABS fucked up and locked up the wheel. There was a period of time that water/slush screwed with some vehicles ABS systems badly to the point of making them dangerous. That or Im a shitty driver on straightaways. Anyhoo...couldnt figure out how I got it upside down so I wasnt getting in another one.

Car crash. One of those deals where you look at mangled wreck after and wonder how anyone survived.
Funny thing is the crash happened while 100% sober. It’s just dumb luck that I didn’t crash while drunk. I drove drunk so often. One of the biggest regrets of my life. I put so many other people at risk. Selfish and stupid. Wish I could say I was just a kid but it went into 30s. No excuses.

This ..oof, It's a miracle we stayed alive (either driving or getting in a car with a dude as drunk as you). Once i was on my motorcycle and some friends were following me by car. I was absolutely hammered. After a bit I didn't see them in the rear view anymore and said fuck it. Next day I asked them wtf they did. They said we came to an intersection, the light was red and I just went straight through it. This makes me cringe when I think of my kids.
