Do they know about your farting issues? Lol Interviewer: Ok Mr Fishooked. Very impressive but one final question. Tell us about a time when you were given a task with extreme time constraints. What was the situation and how did you manage it? Fishhooked, sweat beading on forehead, long pause: there was this time one early morning I was heading out to go fishing in my kayak, but then I had this searing gas pain and nowhere to go… “Did I mention that I can fart on the wall between the mens and womens room so that it can be clearly heard by any woman in their restroom?”

I need to do that again for old times sake. I have that filed under "Good inter-departmental communication skills"

After closing in on 3 months away from 35 years at my current company (!) two weeks ago my team was told that we will no longer have an environment to support. Myself and 6 of my team members were given until 10/14/22 as our last day of employment. I am more mad at myself for not doing anything about it 3 years ago when they gutted my team and let 2/3 of them go, we we all devastated and gutted. A lot of good people were let go. I really felt like I was coasting the last 2 years, polishing the brass on the Titanic. I got caught up in the day to day work when I should have been updating my resume and looking elsewhere. Hell I wasn't even shitposting here or elsewhere lol I mistakenly thought my experience would insulate me from this, as it has time and time again from previous employer layoff binges. Instead it just made me a target I always said I wanted more time for kayaking, but not like this lol. Ive never been severed before so I have no idea if my severance package is good or not. The week after I was a zombie and in total shellshock, now I am feeling a bit better about things but still stressed the fuck out. I haven't had formal job interviews in probably decades - all of my job changes here were internal and usually informal ones with people I knew already. So anyway fellas wish me luck - I have a few things in the hopper with other positions at the company, but also some interviews lined up with some competitors. Any headhunters here or anyone in the industry if you have any advice I'll be glad to take it. but it still sucks...now we have something to follow...your future...lol...

Best of luck Fish. It happened to a lot of us. I got canned from a good job with good pay but with terrible pressure. They were eliminating a layer of management and I was in the thick of it. Wifne said it would have killed me if I had stayed there. It was during a big recession and there were no, and I mean no, jobs in my field. Settled on a start up with shitty pay and long hours and iffy paychecks, no health insurance, etc. It worked out in the end as the company was acquired, re-acquired, and re-acquired again. Each time my position and pay improved and the great part was I never had to supervise another fucking soul, which was outstanding. Most people who lose their job and have the skills usually have no problem landing on their feet. I expect you will do fine.

Sorry to hear about what happened. If there is a positive, it's that companies are looking for skilled, experienced workers and it sounds like with 35 years in you more than meet those criteria. My wife took a severance from her company rolled her 401K into an IRA and is now doing subsitute teaching and enjoying it. Good luck on the interviews.

Good luck. You will land on your feet. While staying at the company might be the most comfortable double dipping on severance and a new job could be great monetarily. I did that about 10 years ago and it was a nice windfall. What is your skill set? Flatulence, shit-posting, memes, and other duties, as assigned. I can't put fishing as a skill because that would indicate some level of expertise. In all seriousness though, I have been in a Lead QA Tester/Engineer/Analyst for over a decade. A good portion of the work also involved Product Management / Project Management / Product & Environmental Support. I didn't have to script any automation since that was handled entirely by our offshore/India team. My biggest mistake(s) were not learning it on my own, no one is hiring QA Engineers unless you write, test, and run all of your own automation. A lot of the job involved loads of product & project management; unfortunately with life getting in the way I haven't really attained any certifications. I know people with PMPs that couldn't manage their way out of a wet paper bag, but it sucks now since that is absent on my resume. Not exactly what I love doing but it pays the bills. Dream scenario would be to get involved in the outdoors industry in some way shape or form. I've got a few promising things coming up within the company but now I'm sitting around waiting to hear back, which is the worst part. Interviewing fucking sucks, I don't want to go through this again. I haven't looked externally yet but did talk to a couple of recruiters at a competitor; right now my current resume is probably more impressive within the company than it is outside of it. If I could find something else while getting paid severance that would be the tits, but for now if I find something within the company I would be able to breathe & reset a bit. Hey aren't you a recruiter?

Hey aren't you a recruiter? I am an Active Directory Engineer/Automation Developer. I agree with your view of certifications. In my experience, and I greatly insulted a Microsoft SME once by saying this, "Good techs speak with their experience, inexperienced techs speak with their certifications". His head almost exploded.

Oh ok I mistook your job for someone elses I think. Every single QA Engineer who runs automation for my company has never every set foot inside an actual field office or knows how the business operates. I started their and paid my dues before heading to the corporate HQ.

Sorry Fish - only saw this today.
Pro tip: If a guy who interviewed you smile and says "I really want you on my staff", run!, Its a trap.
Tried that on a female friend and I got detention.

Bump Update fish. Que pasa ? I got an offer on Friday! I used my wife's computer (we both work at the same company) and I scoped out a position that was posted internally only. I emailed the recruiter directly with my resume, and then annoyed her with emails asking for updates. A week later she responds and says the hiring manager wants to speak to me. First screening with the recruiter on Thanksgiving morning (she was from Canada so its no holiday there for them). Tuesday of this week I interviewed with the hiring manager, then Thursday with the VP (her boss). These were the only interviews I really felt I nailed - I've had loads of practice the last 2 months. Friday morning the VP asks for references, and Friday afternoon I was out hiking when I got the call with the offer. It's a lateral move but I'm still over the moon about it. If this dragged into the new year Im sure I would have fallen into some kind of depression hole. It's been really taxing on my psyche trying to be "on" for these interviews , and sitting around waiting for emails on updates. Best part is my start date isn't until January (as of now) so I basically have this whole month off to deal with the holidays (and collect unemployment).
