After closing in on 3 months away from 35 years at my current company (!) two weeks ago my team was told that we will no longer have an environment to support. Myself and 6 of my team members were given until 10/14/22 as our last day of employment. I am more mad at myself for not doing anything about it 3 years ago when they gutted my team and let 2/3 of them go, we we all devastated and gutted. A lot of good people were let go. I really felt like I was coasting the last 2 years, polishing the brass on the Titanic. I got caught up in the day to day work when I should have been updating my resume and looking elsewhere. Hell I wasn't even shitposting here or elsewhere lol I mistakenly thought my experience would insulate me from this, as it has time and time again from previous employer layoff binges. Instead it just made me a target I always said I wanted more time for kayaking, but not like this lol. Ive never been severed before so I have no idea if my severance package is good or not. The week after I was a zombie and in total shellshock, now I am feeling a bit better about things but still stressed the fuck out. I haven't had formal job interviews in probably decades - all of my job changes here were internal and usually informal ones with people I knew already. So anyway fellas wish me luck - I have a few things in the hopper with other positions at the company, but also some interviews lined up with some competitors. Any headhunters here or anyone in the industry if you have any advice I'll be glad to take it.

Do you have any experience at offensive tackle?
Seriously. Hate that it happened but sounds like you’ll be back on track in short order. Best to you sir!

I'm sure you will land something soon. Just follow the process (and your gut), you'll get through.

Sorry I missed this, was watching the Jet Comedy. Same thing happened to the wifne during the plague. She had survived boss after boss, cut after cut for 2o years. All the top brass changed and no one knew what she did or what her value was. She became a number and a salary and boom she was gone when the stock started to tank. All the different depts. she interfaced with were like wtf because she was an a-political resource for them for so many years. At first she was pissed and hurt, then she realized she needed to get out of there. They gave her a years salary. Before a few months went by, someone from the company (one of her tech partners) reached out and admitted they needed her but couldnt re-hire her. Would she consider consulting? She found someone to help her incorporate and a consulting co. that would handle her billing etc. She ends up doing the same job, remotely, getting paid her severance, while banging them a couple hundy an hour for consulting.
We just have to rely on my retiree benefits and she wont get bonuses anymore. She's already moved on to another gig and her rate increased. She's home/hits the gym/no commute.
Bottom line, your skills are worth something, dont sell yourself short. Consider consulting, especially if the wifne's job can cover your medical etc.
Good luck, brother. I knew something was up when I was seeing all the kayak pics, lolz.

How many tech dudes at one point goes "hey, I'm the only person who knows how this thingamajigg works..". Quits, and comes back as a consultant while hiking up his rates. I see the most ridiculous things...you mean our entire sales go through that tool we hand made and that reddit geek is the only dude who knows how to fix it if it crashes? Good luck Fish. Super positive to see you already have interviews lined up.

I knew something was up when I was seeing all the kayak pics, lolz. LOL all those kayaking pics is just my normal activity - imagine if I had some real time off in between jobs I would be traveling everywhere lol. Yeah this news was recent but I felt it was coming for awhile - shame on me for getting complacent. The one thing that has helped is having a lot of friends in the company - I was basically already offered a job as a lifeline should the other interviews not work out - that's ok I guess, but I can't see myself doing it long term. I have some interviews this week with a competitor whose benefits are way better than my current company - I'm talking fully paid medical benefits and unlimited PTO, which is mind-boggling to me, so we'll see what happens with that. The first week after the news I was a bit of a mess; I'm still loaded with anxiety but hopeful something shakes out this week.

Super positive to see you already have interviews lined up. Third interview this morning for a position I had my eye on. Last week I got the tag-team interview from 2 folks within the team; it helped that I knew them already and worked with them on the past on a few things. This one seems to be moving faster than the usual slothlike pacing of the interview process, so Im taking that as a good sign.

Lol Interviewer: Ok Mr Fishooked. Very impressive but one final question. Tell us about a time when you were given a task with extreme time constraints. What was the situation and how did you manage it? Fishhooked, sweat beading on forehead, long pause: there was this time one early morning I was heading out to go fishing in my kayak, but then I had this searing gas pain and nowhere to go…

Good luck. You will land on your feet. While staying at the company might be the most comfortable double dipping on severance and a new job could be great monetarily. I did that about 10 years ago and it was a nice windfall. What is your skill set?
