We all know Rex is gone, and we all agree that it's the right and necessary move. Many Jets fans are divided on Idzik though. While I'm in the Fire Idzik campaign (like most, I'd say), can we take a moment and realize that there may be some legitimate negative consequences?
First of all, firing Rex will be amazing for X's and O's but let us consider the chance that it could lose the locker room. Uncle Rex is gone, the players' favorite, chummy old coach is gone. The next guy will have to grip them in a similar way, but be different enough for us not to fall into the same hole. Is Rex so far entrenched in these players' blood that they won't play hard for anyone else? Will another man in this league be able to garner the same amount of affection from his players? Maybe this is why nobody ever gave Rex a job before we did - they knew that he would be WAY too affable with his players, and that it could eventually make him unfireable, as his players would simply love him too much. With the next coach, we risk losing the lockerroom from day 1. This is why Idzik/next GM must be EXTREMELY careful in choosing the next man up... otherwise, we will need a completely new roster for the next coach to get him guys that will play hard for him. This will take at least 2 years.
On a similar note, firing Idzik may be a bad move, even though its the one I personally want. Think about it: you're a prospective GM, and you're interviewing for the Jets job. But you just saw John Idzik get fired after two seasons. Two terrible seasons in which some great moves were made and some awful moves were made, the latter clearly outweighing the former. How could you take this job and feel any sort of comfort or safety in it? Wouldn't you rather go elsewhere, or hold out for a better opportunity elsewhere, knowing that you're going somewhere where you could be fired after two seasons? I'd bet GM's around the league are sympathizing pretty hard for Idzik right now, because being fired 2 years into your 'vision' isn't exactly something common or a good recipe for success. How could firing Idzik after 2 seasons make us attractive to a good GM candidate?
We saw this in this last offseason with the Browns and Pettine. They missed on their guys and 'settled' for Pettine - in hindsight, it seems like a great hire (so did Rex though). Could we have to 'settle' for a GM after firings ours after 2 seasons?
Using this pessimistic logic, we are screwed either way: Fire Idzik and Rex, become an unattractive destination for a good GM candidate and thus an unattractive destination for a good coaching candidate... OR... fire Rex and keep Idzik, thus becoming an unattractive destination for a good HC candidate, and just delaying the inevitable of becoming an unattractive destination for a good GM candidate in the future, inheriting a further dysfunctional team.
Looks like we're in for at least another 3-5 years of misery. I don't think our next GM/HC will be our first choice, because i simply cannot see this team being an attractive destination. We will have a reputation for giving up on decision makers before allowing them to make enough decisions. Cleaning house now, getting rid of both Rex and Idzik, will help us expedite these few years of misery, but it will not make us attractive to the next batch of candidates and thus we should not expect immediate success with them.
