Watched the game with my Islanders friend at a bar tonight. Made him buy the first round of drinks because somehow I knew he wouldn't be there for the 2nd round.

They really went about as far as could be expected especially with the banged up D -- but it was the inability to score consistently that killed them in this series, just couldn't generate any consistent pressure tonight. At least the Game 6 win meant that the Caps couldn't celebrate a series win on the last outing on Coliseum ice.

Sorry it turned out this way for you guys but have to admit I'm a bit relieved. So now imagine a Ranger fan needling you guys non-stop now about your team losing, that's what Vin did last year except it was the Finals, not the first round of the playoffs (first one in 20 yrs) We will NEVER FORGET!

Fuck it. Missed opportunities. Not just this series (game 2), but all season long. Home ice game 7 might have helped.

Barry Trotz won my respect during the course of this series and capped it off being as gracious as you could be in post game comments this evening.
Tough to watch this game tonight. They just didn't play with the desperation that the Caps came with until down a goal. I knew we were likely doomed when they went right back to playing passively after the equalizer. It was just a matter of time before they gave up another. You can't play not to lose and expect a win.
Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed this season and consider it a success. the future is bright. Now just need to add to the core and take another step forward next year.

A few roster tweaks, ditch Cappy (not gonna happen, Garfs 'scape goat), and they'll be OK for next year. Hopefully Snowy won't panic 10 games in nxt season and trade away Okposo and a 1st and 2nd for some dickhole rental player.

This. I made my subtle dig earlier about the Isles not getting to the 2nd round, but that's all I need to do as a Rangers fan. There's no reason to revel in someone else's misery....unlike Vin.

I don't recall Vin posting in this or previous JI Islander threads.

This sucks... i felt more emotionally invested in this years team than I have in a while, and while I do believe the future is bright, Cappy or no Cappy, I wasnt ready for this season to end. I really thought for a few minutes when they tied it up, that they were going to finish with intensity.
At the end of the day, no one picked this team to make the playoffs in the preseason. Adding Boychuk and Leddy raised expectations, and while I really wanted a first round victory, they gave us a better season than they have in years.
One positive from the last two games - Mayfield really impressed. Call me crazy, but if Garf can package Reinhart + to improve the team, I might do it

And it kinda came out of left field quite frankly. It was like a 2nd grader who couldn't stop making fun of a classmate who dropped his ice cream at lunch. It got old....quick.

Not too many people preseason saw the Isles having this kind of success. At the same time, it becomes a big disappointment given where they were with about 2 months left in the season. They were at the top of the Eastern Conference and most people were talking about whether or not they could would the Conference, not whether they'd get out of the 1st round. I too thought that once they tied up the game it was lining up for an Islanders win which would have them emerge as a slightly tired but very motivated team with some momentum heading into a series with the Rangers. Truth be told, I wasn't looking forward to a Rangers-Islanders series....not sure my heart could take it.

Truth be told, I wasn't looking forward to a Rangers-Islanders series....not sure my heart could take it. You can look at it that way, from midseason, but I think some were wondering, is the first half Islanders the real team, or were they due for a second half "course correction". Young teams like them often have issues maintaining that level for a whole season. Hopefully this was a good learning experience for the core. And you have to look at it from where the team has come from in recent history - yes, no 2nd round games, but there were milestones not hit in ages. There are definite positives - first 100+ point season in 31 years, after missing the playoffs last year. Boychuk (who was awesome against Ovechkin in the playoffs) signed long term to a fairly reasonable extension. Leddy the same. Halak overall gave us the best goaltending in a while. Hammer is locked up longterm and will be back from the MCL next season. Strome improved, JT just missed the points total, and the fourth line is arguably the best in hockey. Theres a good 4-5 year window where the core is locked up; add a physical veteran defenseman, shuffle some extra pieces around, hope Pulock, Mayfield, Reinhart keep developing, sign a 1b goalie, sign a big winger perhaps... a few tweaks, and I dare say they're contenders for the next 4-5 years.
