This may become our grilling thread. I need a new charcoal grill and I'm looking at this. Might lob it at the wife as a last second gift idea. I have an older 22" Weber charcoal grill without the table or assisted starter. Need to replace that thing. www.weber.com/grills/series/performer/performer-deluxe-22

I don't really see the need for these gas ignition models. I just use a chimney and a simple propane blowtorch to light my coals. Why are you looking to get rid of the kettle you have, they pretty much last forever, you can just replace old grates. What kind of budget do you have? Are you looking to do low and slow smoking as well?

But my Performer has basically been on burger/hot dog duty because about two years ago I picked up a kamado that has now become my favorite cooker.

Those ceramic cookers are pretty versatile, grilling, smoking, even firing up pizzas. I like the oval shape of the Primo, I was going back and forth between that and a Kamado Joe, but then an event came up that I got hired out for and needed a big charcoal grill so my money went to the weber ranch kettle instead. This is gonna be my next purchase, either this size or the smaller one: It will make it easy to cook a bunch of chicken efficiently. I had some thighs from a guy who uses one for his chicken entry in competition and I was instantly sold.

My older 22" has seen better days and was knocked over in a wind storm about a year ago so it's dented, etc. It was relatively cheap as well because it was the basic model with an ash can but no table or even a lid holder. It was a gift. I have a large BBQ island with a propane grill already but I want to get back to charcoal cooking. Damage aside, my first 22" Weber was great so I'm looking for something similar with a few more bells and whistles (table, lid holder, quick start propane ignition, etc.). The budget isn't really a problem as I don't mind spending to get something that will last 10+ years. I'm open to any suggestions from the guy who fed me some great pulled pork sliders in Philadelphia two years ago this month before watching Sanchez throw footballs to Eagles (who could have seen that foreshadowing?!?!?) Thanks Joe!

HAHA, yeah that was a great time up until kickoff! If you want charcoal and more bells and whistles than one of the ceramic kamado style grills is the way to go. The weber performer you originally linked to really won't improve your experience much other than being slightly easier to light. Once you get a starter chimney and simple home depot torch, you really won't have to deal with any more hassle anyway. One of those kamado cookers can let you cook low and slow for long cooks to make things like pulled pork, hot and fast for grilling and getting a great sear on steaks, or kicking the heat up even more and doing pizzas with brick oven-like heat. They all have options and accessories to add all the bells and whistles you and your budget can handle. One of these grills would definitely upgrade your grilling experience and give you the tool to make a lot of great stuff Here are links to some of the top producers, Big Green Egg, these are the original, the one everyone knows. Great quality but they nickel and dime you on all the accessories you need to buy to get set up. Kamado Joe, a little cheaper, some great features, comes with some accessories that green egg sells separately. Primo, I like the oval shape, made in America Komodo, the ultimate in the category, lawn jewelry, they are beautiful, priced to match! There is a LOT of info on these cookers online, plenty of forums and owners groups. You can google "kamado joe vs big green egg" etc to see differences. If you are in the PA area, I know the guy who owns Tasty Licks BBQ Supply in Shillington outside Reading. Great bbq shop and he is a Green Egg and Kamado Joe dealer.

One other company to look at to just oogle at, this is my money is no object grill that I am currently hard for, Grillworks, an Argentinian asador style grill. Forget charcoal, you are working with wood and embers here. Fell in love with this style during a trip to Argentina years ago. This company makes functional works of art. Some big time chefs are installing these grills in their restaurants.
