This is basically where I stand as well. I refuse to believe that the same civilization that put a man on the moon cannot extract fossil fuels from the earth cleanly and safely. You left out cost effectively. I'm all for drilling for oil on federal lands but fracking scares me. I'm glad Cuomo banned it in upstate NY. He didnt ban it because he is concerned about the environment. His wealthy donors that live in NYC get their drinking water from the regions where the major fracking was to occur. If it was somewhere else he wouldn't have gave a fuck and would be touting how many jobs he "created".

1. Yes, water can outsmart gravity. Pore pressure. Trees get water up from the ground to its leaves, for example.

If you had said capillary action or adhesion/cohesion, it would be closer to real science, but in this case, the spaces are too large for those forces to come into play. And yes, soil does filter chemicals and other contaminents: soilquality.org/functions/filter_buffer.html

The pipes crack as soon as they sink them. I read somewhere that five or ten percent are guaranteed to fail.

^Interesting. FTR I'm not against fossil fuels or shale gas extraction. I think the method used to extract it sucks. This is basically where I stand as well. I refuse to believe that the same civilization that put a man on the moon cannot extract fossil fuels from the earth cleanly and safely. You would think so, but many many oil spills say otherwise.

IE no matter the quantites you jam down there there is no tipping point where the soil just can't filter anymore?

You would think so, but many many oil spills say otherwise. A combination of corporate greed, laziness and human error. P.S. A little food for thought and something you will never see reported on the news or hear from the green crowd. Its called a natural oil seep. Google it. And they are non-stop. In fact the naturally occurring seeps in the Gulf of Mexico that seep more oil per year than that was lost in the most recent "disaster" in 2010.

Yes it's a "natural" resource so it exists in the wild. Doesn't mean we have to ass rape the earth to get it out.

Might have better luck with a wind sail. I am concerned about the environment and I would like to preserve as much as possible. I also do believe humanity has had an effect on our climate. But since I am a natural contrarian I am compelled to challenge what Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio tell me. And the "science" behind this has become big business as well as politicized.

And thats bc if the shit ever hit the fan it would be a lot worse than some flammable water.
