Agreed. He wasn't the best, but he was aggressive and built the team his coach wanted. He trusted them and went after the players they wanted and made sure he got them. Also if you're going to judge his drafts you also have to add Kris Jenkins, Braylon Edwards, and Santonio Holmes. He got them for pennies on the dollar. Feeding into Rex was his downfall. It is what happens when you mortgage your future for a Super Bowl run. You had better get there, because it is going to get ugly when the older guys retire and you have no young depth to develop. I thought he did it well. He never truly mortgaged the future. Nobody thought we were going to make the ACCG in 09, but it forced his hand. He had to be aggressive because we came so close with a rookie QB that showed a ton of promise in the playoffs. Sanchez was our future at that point. If Sanchez continued to get better he would have covered up some of the warts as we retooled our team. The problem was, was Sanchez wasn't ready to take over the team and we started missing on picks.

Tanny was the best GM the Jets have had in my lifetime. How sad is that? Agreed. He has regressed though because I think he's become addicted to the flashy pick/signings.

There is a reason Tanny did what he did, and he had far more success than either of his successors -- you will get no argument from me there. The mess that this team is today goes back beyond Idzik. We have brought in so little talent in the draft (except DL) over the last 10 years that we are a complete mess. And I have little to no confidence that we have the right guys in charge today to fix it.

It was time for him to go and I'll never argue that decision. Looking back he drafted four ring of honor type players, took the lowly Jets to their most successful seasons in my lifetime, but never hit on that QB that every franchise needs. Mac has been a fucking disaster so far and Idzik was even worse.

It was the perfect storm since Mangini was their coach. The problem was, was Sanchez wasn't ready to take the reigns in 2011. We left him out to dry thinking he'd be ready to carry the team. Hell if Farve wasn't so dead set about sticking it to the Packers we might have won the Superbowl in 09/10. A healthy Favre with our defense would have been unstoppable. No other Jets GM has built a team that good in a longgggg time.

Basically we've had the perfect shit storms of GMs. One that traded away draft picks for vets and lived off a few amazing picks. Then the exact opposite. A GM that was too safe and missed on a million picks.

The mess that this team is today goes back beyond Idzik. I'm not trying too stick up for Tanny but roster turnover is at an all time high. I would never place any blame on this roster from a GM that was here in 2012.

It is what happens when you mortgage your future for a Super Bowl run. Right now we're mortgaging our future for a four win season. Look at all of the dead money Mac is pushing into next year along with the worst extensions(renegotiations). All of that for Ryan Fitzpatrick. Aside from Fitz & Revis, we won't have a lot of dead $$$ going into next season. It's 11 million.

I guess my point was more that Tanny's last few drafts are part of the reason for this six year run of average to bad football with no playoffs. A run that does not appear likely to end next season either. We have had no consistent success adding talent through the draft since 2006/07.

Gilchrist, Carpenter, and Skrine come to mind.

Anyone else watching the FCS Playoffs: S Dakota St v N Dakota State. Great trick play pulled off by SDSU for an early TD. The hidden fullback trick.
