Stabbing a dude in the throat 15-20 times, then punching the shit out of him repeatedly, and then gouging his eyeballs out...was pretty graphic to me. Sure as hell more graphic than anything I’ve maybe ever seen in a TV show. GoT has never even done shit like that. Closest you get is the Mountain crushing the Viper’s head, and you barely saw any of that bedsides the aftermath from what I can remember. You also see Castle blow some dudes face off in the warehouse and blow like 1/3 of another guys head off from the back. Frank raking Russo’s face over the broken mirror and turning him into Jigsaw was pretty awesome too. The screams sold the shit out of it. I was perfectly content. The Punisher: War Zone movie had more consistent violence but was all 100% CGI and sucked a massive, dirty asshole. The show found a nice balance IMO and had plenty of practical effects. Ok so not a Punisher historian, never read the comics or saw any of the movies but I know the story about his wife and kids so I appreciate them not recreating that story line.
We get a little of it but we don’t need to see the family slaughtered again.
Kept waiting for it and I’m glad they decided not to go there.

As for the out of character assessment I've consistently made, you really need to go back and re-read (if you've ever read them at all?) the first 100 or so issues, or maybe the first 50 of 'War Journal' and get re-acquainted with the character you purportedly love, because this iteration sucks dick. Bernthal is awful. How any real Punisher fan (see, I can be a passive/aggressive dick, too) can defend this as being a quality rendition is ridiculous. That said, I think I owe it to myself to read the Punisher MAX stuff. Feel free to recommend an arc. Ironingly, Jane's movie was on last night. Ignoring the goofy comic-acting of the cast, his is the truest version. Shame the casting people missed that one. |

We talked about this roughly a year ago in the other thread: The "unhinged" stuff was dialed back exponentially in The Punisher compared to Daredevil S2. Can he still be hotheaded? Sure, but I've never had a problem with that stuff coming through when he's in the middle of murdering the shit out of criminals. I only have a gripe when he's not in the process of "punishing" and it can come through in just normal conversations. Hell, even a few of the Mike Zeck covers of the old Grant/Zeck mini series portray him as a madman when the heat is on:    Does Bernthal give some perfect portrayal of Frank Castle? Nope, no one has so far. Come to think of it I don't think any comic book hero has been portrayed totally accurately outside of Christopher Reeve's Superman. We still haven't gotten an accurate screen portrayal of Batman. Closest thing is still Adam West doing his iteration of the schlocky 50's/60's Silver Age Batman. Overall, I enjoyed the show for being a throwback to 70's/80's urban vigilantism. The stuff you really don't see anymore. It's not perfect, but I found it pretty entertaining. The first 6 or so episodes can be a bit of a slog at times (I could've completely done without the whole Madani/Stein crap trying to avenge the guy killed in Afghanistan) but the last 3-4 episodes totally made the show for me. |
