Seahawks Blowout Win Sees ‘Sunday Night Football’ Ratings Down, Again...
On a day that ended in gunfire and tragedy at a country music festival in Las Vegas, Sunday also saw continuing controversy with NFL players kneeling before games, more standing, locking arms, and some sitting during the national anthem.
RelatedNFL Players Continue Kneeling For Sunday Games, But Some Teams Opt For Standing With Arms Linked
Several members of the Seattle Seahawks chose to sit before Sunday Night Football kicked off last night, while the Indianapolis Colts decided to link arms in a show of unity for equality and racial justice. The result saw the Colts crushed as the Seahawks scored a blowout 46-18 win.
Whether it was politics or the final score or a mix of both, it was no win for NBC and the NFL last night.
With a 11.0/19 in metered-market results, last night’s SNF was down 5% from last week when the Washington Redskins beat the Oakland Raiders 27-10. As the league took another week-by-week ratings hit just a month into the 2017-18 season, Sunday’s game also was down a bit year-to-year. Compared with the then-season-low of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 43-14 smackdown of the Kansas City Chiefs in primetime on October 2, 2016, last night’s SNF dipped 2% in the early numbers.
On a night of competition on the other nets, that 2016 game ended up with a 6.7/22 rating among adults 18-49 and 18.06 million viewers. Against the debut of Star Trek: Discovery and more, last week’s 8:30-11:15 PM ET Redskins-Raiders battle saw a final numbers of 6.3/23 in the key demo and a total audience of 17.48 million.
Now, blowouts usually always pour cold water on NFL ratings, and all things considered, last night’s MM numbers held up OK. However, with the politics that have become such a watched player in their own right in the past few weeks, the league might be close to having reached a tipping point as of yesterday. Barely ahead of last year’s struggling season in the ratings, the big-money NFL now finds itself losing traction in the numbers and public perception.
Related‘Wisdom Of The Crowd’ & ‘Kevin (Probably) Saves The World’ Review: No Wisdom Or Salvation Here
We’ll update later with more SNF numbers later, plus the debuts of Ten Days in the Valley, Ghosted, Wisdom of the Crowd and more. Right now, we’ll say that last night’s game peaked with an 11.7/19 during the second quarter’s 9:30-10 PM slot. Also, here are the Top 10 markets for last night’s game:
Seattle – 42.5/68
Indianapolis – 21.0/33
Portland – 18.9/34
New Orleans – 16.4/23
Milwaukee – 15.3/25
Norfolk – 14.3/23
Richmond – 14.3/22
Denver – 13.7/23
Buffalo – 13.7/21
Kansas City – 13.3/22

SOME OF THE COMMENTS...
Reply 'They keep trying to blame any ratings loss on the weather, blow outs, etc., when all polls show that people are tuning out because of the political protests the NFL players continue to engage in. How much more proof do they need than being booed, ratings dropping, and polls consistently showing disapproval? And now the Ravens get massively booed for kneeling to pray for unity before the game and act clueless as to why they are still getting booed – are they serious? Because people are tired of all of it. Just play the game already! All their calls for unity are ridiculous, when they are the ones dividing people in the first place. They can’t be that clueless, can they?'
Reply...'The NFL will not GAIN any viewers from these protests. No one will become a football fan because of kneeling or sitting players. Rather, the league will only LOSE viewers because of the uproar.'
Reply... 'I don’t think the NFL realizes that the fans aren’t coming back. Some of my friends are watching hockey instead but most are just finding other stuff to do...' REPLY 'Sorry no matter what Trump thinks or what the kneeling is doing this game was never going to be highly rated even if it wasn’t a blow out. First the two markets aren’t huge and second well both teams haven’t exactly burned up the field with their play. You get bigger teams on Sunday and Thursday nights ratings will be better. And of course there is the other factor and that is people watch television in different ways. But of course Trump will take credit for the loss of viewers. P.S. The Wed wild card game in baseball probably wont be strong either with AZ and CO as the two teams aren’t big market either. With the exception of a few shows ratings for everything are down not just football'
Reply...
Trump is late to the game: people have been turning off since Kaepernick started this, seems like a long time ago.
Reply...
'Fords’ biggest selling vehicle is the F-150 Pick-up Truck. That and their other larger series Pick-ups make up a significant portion of their profits. Any bets as to where most of these buyers lean politically?'
Reply... 'Football is King and will always be King. Geenbay and Giants have 15 and 20 year wait list for tickets, and many of the rest of the teams have PSL Seat licensing protection. Football money machine will be just fine.'

Part of the reason Trump won the election I think, was the backlash against Hollywood and musicians telling the working class of America Hey I play electric guitar and wrote a few songs so I know more than you do. Or I was in several HS plays and blew a producer to get into a movie so now I'm a political genius. The players in the NFL have now entered this realm. I don't have PSLs, I have upper deck tickets because I refused to buy into the bullshit of making billionaires richer. The players have pissed off many Americans with this horseshit, who the fuck wants to hear an opinion from someone who gets paid millions of dollars to play a sport? STFU and hit someone or catch a pass. If you can't stand up for the Anthem and pay 1 minute of respect a week for a symbol of a country that makes you rich beyond your wildest dreams then why don't you kiss our collective asses.

Those who kneel during the anthem needs to get kicked in the face....HARD while they're kneeling as if their heads were soccer balls. This shit would be well-deserved for taking a dump on our country.

So the only qualification for women voters is that your candidate has a smelly cunt hole?!? That's incredibly demeaning. _

This thread is exactly why it happens. Who gives a shit what they do before the game? Ignore it and it will be gone in no time.
What's really killing the game is more commercials than football. Watching the players stand around scratching their balls waiting for the tv commercials to end 20 times a game is what's driving me away.

The most ineffectual protest in the history of protests.
1) They are dishonoring the very thing that gives them the right to protest. 2) The protest itself says nothing about what they are actually protesting. 3) The protest is alienating and angering people who actually otherwise agree with the real, not very obvious, subject of the protest. 4) If any of these guys are doing something more than taking a knee in support of their "cause", they are doing a piss poor job getting the word out. 5) The very things that would help them in their cause -- money, popularity, fame -- are being squandered by their ill-conceived protest.
How about this instead. A bunch of them get together to create a public service announcement type ad -- if done right - they could get the NFL and/or Nike to pay to create and air it.
It begins with a dark screen. A player in street clothes is slowly brought to light. The players street clothes are what you might see a kid wearing on an inner city street. The player should be someone who grew up in a bad area and has some relevant knowledge of the problem (i.e. police who assume you are up to no good because you are a young black man). He starts... My name is ________ . I grew up in _________. It was a tough neighborhood, and I'm not gonna lie to you, there were some pretty bad people in my neighborhood. But, you know what, there were, and still are, many good people, who were fighting for what many of you watching already have - a safe and secure place to live and raise your family. I have no doubt that many, many police officers are fine men and woman of all races trying to to a good job, but we've got a problem in this country. The problem is that there are police officers who assume that a young black man in the type of neighborhood I grew up in is up to no good, and that he's a bad kid just because of his skin color and where he happens to live. Some players in the NFL tried to bring attention to this issue, and sadly, it really became an issue of it's own. We'd like to take a step back and re-focus on what the real issue is.... [and then he could talk about whatever thing the NFL and NFLPA have come up with in this regard]

Over 80% of all assaults on police are by black inner city folks. It is the reason they exit the vehicle with their radar on and guard up.

I love watching the NFL suffer a little bit but lets not make the forum suffer. We talk about how we want football to go back to being a distraction from real life. We should let the Runway be a distraction from this as well.
This isnt about the Jets in particular. Putting it in the politics forum.
