abcnews.go.com/US/amazon-raise-companys-minimum-wage-15-employees/story?id=58225644Im purposely not using the term minimum wage, because with a $1 trillion market cap and their revenues, making money hand over fist, Bezos can certainly afford to pay his employees more and still make a hefty profit, and get good press and vibes from the masses while doing it. Unfortunately, this is now going to revive all the "raise the minimum wage" supporters. Lost in the message will be that its the company's choice to make this move, whatever their motives, of which there are many Im sure, some altruistic, some financial. And they say they're going to lobby the govt for an increase to the federal minimum wage. That should be fun to watch!

Adam Smith wrote about this over 200 years ago. Amazon needs to attract employees and compete with the others. So Target and Walmart are a little behind but won't need legislation to force this. This is the result of a good economy and will result in higher inflation. That inflation will be a tax on the poor more than the rich.

If Amazon wants to start their pay at $15/hr that is great because their business model can support it but it has nothing to do with what a lot of small shops can pay. The company I used to work for paid summer interns $21/hr. Does that mean everyone should? Absolutely not. It is a Fortune 50 company, they can afford it. If you mandated that ALL interns had to earn the same as that company paid all that would happen is there would be far fewer internship opportunities where kids could get real experience outside of the classroom bubble.

Absolutely, its going to get spun as an argument for higher minimum wages, but its in reality, the result of a successful company making money and paying to retain employees and still maintaining healthy profits.

Fuck Amazon. Break them up. Then Google and Facebook. I understand your frustration but you now sound like the libs that wanted to break up Walmart. Amazon and Walmart provide goods and services at prices and convenience that make our lives easier. To me... Google and FB are more like the NY Times. Simply not credible. Even Yahoo.... the main page of Yahoo news is FULL of anti Kavanaugh conspiracy. Not ONE story that talks about both sides.

If Amazon is left unchecked they will control everything we buy. They are even starting a pharmacy. What do you think comes after that? Their own pharma company perhaps? If they went after Microsoft in the 90s because of friggin Internet Explorer then they sure as hell can go after Google. They have a monopoly on the flow of information. And they rig it. Most dangerous entity on Earth. They are the big brother.

Understood but competition is here with Target, Walmart etc. But your point is very well taken. I am a constitutional conservative and one area I recognize govt is needed is anti trust. No question. just don’t think we are quite there yet.

Yes, they have their hands in pretty much everything retail, grocery, pharma, etc. but they still have a number of competitors in each of those areas, like Walmart, Target, etc. They're not yet near the level of AT&T in the 80s, for instance.

I heard from my sister’s brother’s cousin’s friend this wasn’t true. Do you just default to "contrarian:? They have the quote from the Amazon spokesman in there that pretty much confirms what they are saying. It all comes down to the bottom line.

Also if true no one is making them stay, they will be able to find another job if it pays better.
