If we can get Demarco Murray for something similar to what Dallas is offering or around the 5 mil range to beat their offer I would do it. Him and Ivory at 70/30 is pretty damn good plus it would benefit him to take a cut on some carries.

What is the opposite of what most people think? Drafting RBs? Yes. There seems to be a trend in thinking that RBs are no longer worth using a 1st round pick. In general, I agree with that but have a slightly nuanced opinion. An elite RB is absolutely worth a high 1st round pick and has the ability to change a game. The question isn't about "worth," it's more about supply in that very good running back seem to be more plentiful now than in the past, and they also do not last as long as other positions like QB, offensive line, etc. I see the RB strategy as getting them at 20, 21, 22 years old on a rookie contract for 4/5 years, then getting them that one big contract when they're about 25. After that, you let them go and find another. I agree with you 100%. The real value for RBs is when they are on their rookie deals, then you only pay the very special ones after that. I'm not opposed to drafting a RB in the first, they just better be special. This year has two backs worthy of first round selections. i think you can fill in with a vet FA RB here and there but I'm not paying any of them more than 4-4.5 million per year.

You are buying very high right now, I'm not sure he would be the same type of back here as he is with Dallas. I wouldn't touch Murray.

This is not the year to pinch pennies. We have $49 million in cap space and if we release CJ and Harvin will have $63 million to spend and we have to spend about 95% of it to be in compliance with league rules. It's time to pin point the players we want and be aggressive in trying to sign them. No more "he's out of our price range", no more excuses.

if you have a good oline, you can roll out almost any decent running back out there and get good production. If you're going to draft one in the first round, you better get Adrian Peterson, or you wasted a draft pick. Cj anderson was undrafted, Justin Forsett was signed for pennies last year and those were two of the best backs in the league last year. Way back when, the Jets had a great oline and led the league in rushing with Scott Dierking and Kevin Long. Build the oline and don't worry about running backs.

His numbers were still pretty good even with a weaker Dallas Oline? I know he had lots of carries this year, but isn't this his first year for so many carries? He was actually underutilized previously.

Use that money towards Iupati and draft one of the better RB prospects this year.

Sorry I repeated my message by accident....I do not disagree, but if we drafted someone like Amari Cooper it would help.

I wouldn't want the Jets to be the suckerteam that pays for Demarco Murray's retirement fund. The Cowboys rode him into the ground in the knowledge that they would be highly unlikely to keep him (they need to pay Dez and Jerry probably thinks that he can get Peterson on the cheap to replace Murray). The Cowboys have low-balled Murray but given his wear & tear, I wouldn't want the Jets to sign him.
I'm also ho hum about CJ Spiller. Seems to be injured a lot at Buffalo. I would rather the Jets roll with what they already have and possibly add another piece through the draft, while putting the money towards filling other needs through free agency.

I would rather put money into our G and RT positions. To me if you have a stud OL, any RB is going to look elite and it helps the QB as well. This is where I focus my money in free agency and/or the draft.

I don't care if he's our only marquee signing, we need to do whatever it takes to sign him.

No he won't. He had a bad year last year and was hurt the year before. He'll probably get between $4-$5 million per year. With a big signing bonus. He's not going cheap, he's the top FA RB this offseason. It's not a simple 4-5 mil deal. He's not going to sign for washed up Chris Johnson money, he's a much, much better player than that. He was hurt for the first time last year. Not the year before. He did not have a bad year last year, he ran for almost 1000 yards at 4.6 a pop. Along with 30+ receptions. The year before over 1200 yards at 6 per., with over 40 receptions. Think you have the wrong player. Justin Forsett will get more money than Spiller this off season. Spiller is coming off an injury plagued year where he had 70 carries. He's not getting big money.
