Looks like a disagreement over value - a Jets offering $1.5M and Gailey wanting $2.5M kinda thing. Hopefully, it gets done at a fair price...although I'm not sure if Gailey trying to negotiate through the media will help matters. I was thinking it wasn't money, but the more I do think about it, Bowles and the Jets may have tipped their hand too fast out there, and made it seem like he was their one and only candidate. If they want him so bad, and maybe didn't think this through too well, they may have to overpay him or hope they find another strong candidate soon.

How hard can it be to get another QB coach? I thought they really wanted Gailey so Bowles could have an experienced RH man. A QB coach is not that! I thought Bowles had wanted Gailey as his OC since before he even had any options as HC. And the guy's been out of the NFL for two years! How much demand could there be for him. This is weird. maybe all those reports that Bowles absolutely had to have Gailey as his OC were exaggerated.

I'm not disagreeing, just not following your train of thought of why they need to divert attention from who they really want (or if that's what you're indeed saying). Who said they need too? Just throwing a theory out in jest, obviously you feel the need to question whether it's plausible. Not questioning whehter it's plausible, I'm questioning what the theory is, or what the motivation is, to be precise. Sorry, I'm not getting you.

The theory is that the team used Chan Gailey as a diversion which allowed them to peruse their #1 candidate without suspicion, you knew that was the theory yet still felt the need to question it.

I found it a bit troubling to see the Jets reaching out for Oakland's QB coach for the same position with NY. I doubt this has any bearing with Chan. Could Macagnan be low balling Gailey as in Idzik 2.0?

No, I did not understand that. I guess because I don't see searches for coordinator positions being such clandestine affairs that teams have to hide what they're doing from other teams.

I really, really hope that this is not a case of the Jets getting the Bowles regime off to a poor start by low-balling his hand-picked OC candidate.
Yes, there may not be massive competition for Gailey (although Cleveland is also interested) but he is a highly experienced coach and would be an asset to Bowles.
If we are going to drag the guy away from a nice life of sitting cosy on the couch shouting at re-runs of Columbo then we at least need to make it worth his while.
Anyway...hope this gets sorted soon and that Bowles gets his preferred choice for OC, be that Gailey or someone else. This is definitely a crucial hire for him.

Schefter just said on ESPN that he spoke to a source who thinks the deal with Gailey eventually gets done.

You see it's the very fact that Chan Gailey is not desirable that makes him being a diversion even more laughable. You need to get off your high horse and lighten up.
