The clock is ticking for the Jets to make a decision on whether to keep wide receiver Percy Harvin. The team has until March 19 to determine whether to cut him or keep him. He is set to make $10.5 million this year. If he is on the roster on March 19, the Seahawks receive the Jets’ fourth-round pick as a condition of the October trade. If Harvin is released, the Jets will send their sixth-rounder to Seattle. “That’s a process we’re working through. We’re going to talk to his agent,” general manager Mike Maccagnan said. “We do think Percy is a very good player, but that’s a process we’re working through right now.” Maccagnan said one option is to ask Harvin to rework his contract. It is highly unlikely Harvin would want to stay with the Jets for less money. If he is going to take less, chances are he would rather go to a contender with a proven quarterback. “You have to look at different options you can do whether you carry him at his current contract, whether you try to restructure him for a more cap-friendly number,” Maccagnan said. Harvin had 29 catches for 350 yards and one touchdown in eight games with the Jets last year. nypost.com/2015/02/19/jets-may-try-to-get-percy-harvin-to-rework-his-contract/

the jets should try. harvin is one of those players who the defenses have to notice. it's been a long time since the jets had an offensive threat. and if they chose the draft route it'll be some time before the drafted player can come up speed. harvin is still young enough to produce a few very nice years.

Larry Fitzgerald just got $22m for two years, that should definitely knock down Harvin's number.

What if we release him March 18 and pick him up March 20 for less money?

What if we release him March 18 and pick him up March 20 for less money? I'm not sure how that would work with the draft pick and a potential bidding war, also if he is willing to work for less the Jets should know that before the release date, I'm sure that would make the difference.

What if we release him March 18 and pick him up March 20 for less money? If that happens, then Seattle still gets the 4th round pick. That's exactly what the Saints did to the Jets in 2008 with Vilma. And the Jets got hosed. That Tannenbaum fiasco was the inspiration behind the Jonathan Vilma rule, so such shenanigans couldn't happen again.

Rather use money to "overpay" Harvin than sign CJ Spiller.

3 yrs/ $18 million, $6 million guaranteed. I wouldn't go a dime over. I'd rather give Cobb $9 million per year, not injury prone, true production and can actually run the route tree from the outside with better hands.
If Harvin is on the team next year the Jets still need to bring in a WR who can play opposite Decker. (i.e. Crabtree). Harvin isn't that guy.
