I have let my son play contact football since he was 8, he is now a Freshman in High School. It's really up to the parents to look out for the safety of their child, the coaches and trainers for these schools don't know your child as well as you do. My son has been fortunate to have not sustained any significant injuries thus far. If or when he does sustain any head trauma then we will re-evaluate. A second concussion would probably be the end for us. This. My eldest plays ball and will for as long as he wants to, or unless something happens that makes cause for concern. You can sustain a concussion playing all kinds of sports, but it's ultimately up to the individuals support network to help monitor such things That's so true about concussions in other sports. In our school, there has actually been a higher rate of concussions in lacrosse than football.

I wouldn't let my kids play ANY organized youth sports. It's the downfall of society. Whatever happened to that fucking psychopath?

I grew up never wearing helmets on bikes or rollerblades and was doing crazy ass jumps. I played football for a few years. We used to climb the gutters and jump off the roof. I've had knives thrown at my head, stuck into my knee cap, and held to my throat. I've almost drowned in my pool when I was 4 because I was badass enough to sink or swim bitches (yeah I sunk). Kids today are a bunch of pussies. We're gonna own these bitches till we're too geriatric to move without pooping our pants. God damned soft hand generation. I don't think it's the kids. It's the parents. And their lawyers.

I have a nine-year-old and he plays flag football. He continues to ask about playing tackle but I have told him not until he is at least 12 years old or likely older. This is for a variety of reasons, notably the health/safety risks, but also because of some things I've heard from people in the sport. I have spoken to people in the NFL and have a friend who is close to Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher. A common opinion that I have heard is that kids playing flag football actually turn out to be better prepared for tackle later on. The reasons are somewhat interesting:
1. When playing tackle at a young age kids are so focused on their equipment, shoulder pads, their helmet fitting correctly that they are partially distracted from what is actually happening on the field or what the coaches are telling them. They may also be so concerned about getting hit that they pay less attention to the fundamentals of how to lineup, route running, etc. In flag football kids tend to be very focused on positioning, their responsibilities on each play, etc.
2. In Flag football there is a reason the flag belt is worn at the waist and has flags on both hips and in the back. This encourages "tacklers" to focus on the hips and to try to reach with both hands to get a solid grab on a flag. It is basically training for proper tackling form when they move up to tackle football. In tackle football kids can get away with some poor form if they are simply big hitters and could be successful tackling high. This can create bad habits.
My friend told me specifically that Jimbo Fisher said he could easily tell which kids had grown up playing flag football. Most of the time those kids had better fundamentals in some areas of the game. I thought that was interesting.

I actually coach my nine year old son. Last year we won the Taconic youth leauge Championship @ West Point. Probably the single most enjoyable thing that I do. Statistics show football at the youth level has less injuries than soccer does.

I gave more concussions then I had, like I say football is kill or be killed if your not going to prepare your son for that then have him play soccer or lacrosse for the fall sport.

Great vehicle to get into a school though for girls and boys.
