First round defense since 2010. Best player available. Again. (and it's a lot more obvious who the good/elite player is at 6 vs 9 or 13 or 29) Tried to trade down - couldn't. Again. But it's all good. Right? Someone please tell me what's different.

Love it.
To all the knuckleheads who say, "We just HAVE TO go offense" and "The ONE THING I know is that we won't go Defensive Line" I just have to say that GMs are a different breed. You can mock all you want, you print out thousands of spreadsheets in your mother's basement and run all the numbers you want, but you can't always predict what a guy will do who has lived and breathed football his whole life. Mac went BPA and I love it. Don't worry about Mo or Richardson....we'll make this work. This DLine was sick and is now unimaginable.

I've heard before this draft started that some considered Williams to be the best football player in this draft. Personally I am dumbfounded that they went defense AGAIN especially on the DLine. But I can understand it. Best Player Available. Also, Wilkerson...who knows what's going on there. The rich get richer... Strengthen a strength. Yeah, strange move unless you listen to how MacDaddy views the draft. He doesn't want to fill needs through the draft. He said he feels that people make mistakes when they draft with need in mind.
I can applaud it. He actually stuck to his guns.

If you listened to what Mac said from day one until now, and you listen to Bowles, and know what he liked to do as a DC, this shouldn't be a surprise.

Granted they have Aaron Rodgers, but I am pretty sure Green Bay has picked defense in the first round like 7 or 8 out of the past ten years.
I know teams have a draft emphasis on 'edge rushers' but I'll be damned if I see why. Who was the last 1st round rush LB that came into the league and dominated? None recently - Von Miller is the last one I can recall.
If you look at non-DE sack leaders, it's matured guys who have learned the position and grown into the physical tools.
Also, regarding any 'actually Williams sucks' talk because the Jets picked him - just look at his tape. Not as clear cut as a young Reggie White - but Williams looks like a man among boys.

LOL doubt it will be him but we are going OL Jake Fisher perhaps? that's who my money's on. if so will look very much like an Idzik draft in the prediction thread I noticed not a single person picked Williams, and I was getting a feeling he would drop to us, but didn't want to change my pick - like that would have made it happen, LOL!

That's mostly because no one thought he would fall to us - myself and others specifically mentioned him a few times in the past few days as a player to take on the off chance he fell. WR, OLB or Williams.

Does no one remember Mac's comments about studying Pittsburgh's draft philosophy? How Pittsburgh is always taking OLBs, even though they had OLBs already??
Now he said that in the context of getting edge rushers, but the same concept applies... constantly stocking the pool, filling the pipeline, because guys get hurt, or they bust, or they get really good and want too much money and leave via free agency.

I didnt expect him to go 1 or 2 - I was expecting the QBs to go there - but personally thought there was no chance he got past 4 or 5.

the only way this isn't the dumbest pick ever, is if the Jets commit to a 40 front. Williams can play DE as well, so lining him up there makes sense. Williams-Wilkerson-Richardson-Coples....
cause otherwise, fuck me.
