On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a C+. Which is high praise from someone with high standards like me.

Mcshay loved our draft, and his fave pick... Devin Smith.

Where the hell have you been? Here or there. I never really posted much in the offseason. This draft is getting me excited now though. Excited? Like when you climbed the ropes in gym class?

Why are you not keen on the Smith pick? I would've preferred DGB or Strong but I can see why the Jets went in a different direction. Smith is more of a compliment to Marshall/Decker and doesn't come with any baggage or lingering injury issues. That was exactly how I felt at the time we picked him, I wanted DGB or strong and was disappointed we went in a different direction, my disappointment had nothing to do with Devin Smith though. Now the dust has settled and I've evaluated him more, I have to say I like the pick, and here's why..... We don't know what Gailey's offense will look like fully, we have an idea but I'm assuming they thought Strong or DGB had too much of a similar skill set to the players we already have. Smith makes defenses now play us a different way, teams will have to respect this offense can now push the ball deep and that's an element of the game we did not have prior to this draft. I'm not buying this one trick pony label and Cimini's scare mongering about Stephen Hills speed, difference between Smith and Hill is that Smith was doin it in the big ten against top defences and better DB's winning a national championship. Another thing I like is how many touchdowns he caught, one of our biggest problems was in the redzone last year, he seems to have a knack for getting open in the endzone and that should help us. Lastly I trust the pro day workout we gave him, he's shown he can run the full route tree, it's just he was not asked to do that at Ohio state, if you watch tape on him he has good hands and tracks the ball well, he makes all kinds of catches I've never seen Hill even attempt. I think we may have a great player here. I think he knocks Kerley down the depth chart. One thing to remember aswell is he had a late 1st-early 2nd round grade on him so this wasn't a reach.

This draft hinges on what delving smith brings to the O. Yes Williams is gonna b great, but we were already solid on D. This team needs to score more and I'm going to wait to c whether the O is that much improved by smith. I hope it is, but at this point I just don't know if we r that much better. Definitely better than idziks draft last year, but I'm not ready to give him an A when I didn't think he addressed out need for a big time WR. Time will tell. Basing it on the history of the jets I'm skeptical .

This draft was an A, the only Jets draft remotely close was the Pennington, Ellis, Abraham, Sparklepony, et al draft IMHO. Ok i missed something. Who is sparklepony

Plus Devin Smith will be a great deep threat from day 1, a badly needed dimension in our offense.....we'll he become more of a complete reciever we'll see...

I went with a B because I tried to consider this logically. Obviously can't grade results of the draft until 3 years from now, but you can grade things like value, need, potential, fit etc. I emotionally want to give this draft an A, but I was optimistic last draft too and well... history. I had a tinge of SOFJ when Williams was the pick. Only with the jets can you feel slightly empty even after getting arguably the best number 1 player in the draft. One that has been described as pro-ready day one, a future perennial pro bowler. Someone once posted some stats that 4/5 last 1st round picks are DL/DE, 7/9 are defense in general. I got too emotionally hung up on wanting to see offense, particularly Amari Cooper. That said: its logically the best result best value, best potential, great fit. Smith great value, huge need, huge potential. I had to go B because I felt that I needed to "explain" the success of the draft in rounds 3-5, where an A, an ideal draft, should blow you away start to finish no questions asked.
Traded down in the 3rd missing out on some good Olinemen and players. But Mauldin looks good, perhaps not spectacular, but good, but overall felt bad to miss out on the talent that got picked between the trade and new position. This is counter balanced with the extra picks turning into a Petty move. A QB of Petty or Grayson would have felt like a smart, future thinking pick at 4th round. The argument here which further cements this draft as a B-ish draft is that the picks have to be justified. An Olineman would have been more impactful immediately. But we do need to work on a legit franchise QB. But we have the pieces to compete right now and need to make things work while we have the DLine, CBs, WRs, we have at this moment which may not be there when Petty is ready. But the drafting of Petty says to Geno that this isn't personal it's business. Get your shit together NOW or get the fuck out; we may have a true QB competition unlike prior years which may finally push Geno to realize his potential as a mid-range QB talent.
So pros and cons in full picture: B.

I gave it a B+ because I don't like Petty, strictly because of the offense he played in. The Art Briles spread is a further simplified version of Offense for Dumbies. I'm just not a fan of someone learning the basics of quarterbacking at the NFL level. It's like showing up for Calc II having never taken Algebra.

I voted B+ to be conservative, but I think they got good or better value in each round, dont think they particularly reached for anyone, and seem to put a premium on character guys for the most part.
