Ill be the first to admit I was severely disappointed with Williams with our first round pick. Not because I don't believe he is a great talent and can add a fucking awesome rotation to our d-line (which should be unstoppable this year).
But for the reason I was hoping we would add a legit offensive weapon to an offense that has been abused and neglected during the ryan reign.
Enter round two, Devin Smith, a true take it to the house deep threat possible monster number 1 wr we have been bitching and crying for, for what seems like an eternity.
Career college stats for his 4 year collegiate career are as follows; 121 receptions, 2503 yds rec, avg a 20.7 per rec, with 30 td's.
In 2011 he had 294 yds for 4 tds. Nothing to write home about.
In 2012 he had 618 yds, for 6 tds, A upgrade to his 2011 season but still mediocre at best.
In 2013 he had 660 yds, for 8 tds. Not the biggest jump but getting respectable.
Last year in 2014 he had 931 yds, with 12 tds all along with the qb position in constant flux for Ohio State. Constant improvement from a wr in the face of adversity year to year is what you want to see.
Now I know our qb position is nothing to write home about but if there is one thing Geno Smith can do is haul it deep.
When given the opportunity Geno can usually hit his wr deep for a huge gain. Devin Smith is the master at hauling in the deep pass from the collegiate level. It almost seems like a match made in heaven.
With Decker, Marshall and Ivory commanding most of the attention I would expect to see a lot of 1 on 1 coverage for Smith. If geno can take advantage of these looks our entire offense jumps up 20% in effenciey with the opposing defenses having to think about a 4th threat.
I would expect for a rookie season for Smith to compile 800 to 900 yds and 7 to 8 tds. Coupled with our 2 pro bowler wr's we should be looking at a very fun and take the top off the d kind of offense this year.
So I ask you this hampur? Where the fuck is the love for Devin Smith???
Ps. Heres a highlight video from youtube showing he isn't a Stephen Hill clone smh....

His picked seemed to surprise the board. And it has been argued that there was superior WR talent available when he was picked. I think that's where the lack of love stems from. That and the recent burn from Hill fresh in our memories. It does occur to me that he may have been the best pcik as he fits the jets need.
But I'm all in, go Jets.

That's about a season -and- a -half for Amari Cooper!!
I think most Jets fans were so ERECT over Cooper and White in the 1st, that by the time Devin Smith was selected the Viagra had worn off.
I like the pick... I think the kid can flat out BALL!! Hoping he has Desean Jackson's attitude and skill!!

I will also point out the fact that whenever a receiver has 25% of his catches going for TD's...... get him at least 8 targets a game!!! PLEASE!

I wanted DGB, that's why I was disappointed. Just gonna suck it and see with this pick.
I do like his skillset though.

I can't speak for everyone, but I think some of the silence can be attributed to his pedigree. Devin Smith has the profile of potentially becoming the next Steve Smith, the way he was back in 2003-2010 with Carolina. What he won't be is the next Alshon Jeffery or AJ Green. That's what I wanted. Granted, we have a couple WRs who mirror some of those skills in Decker and Marshall, but I myself wanted a homegrown alpha dog. Instead we got a WR who has a high ceiling, but a low floor... just another role player. The fact that DGB was there and we passed stings (at present).
I've moved on, and have decided to get behind the pick. Here's hoping this guy takes the top off the enemy's defense. Big play threat that has you standing out of you seat when the ball's sailing through the air.

Hated the Williams pick at 6 (NOT the player, love the player actually) but after seeing HL's of Smith, I am starting to believe these guys really do know what they are doing. Smith looks like he has the potential to be special. I am so excited to see this team play. Haven't been so excited since 2010.
Oh and

DGB was still on the board. They are not the same player but that is who he will be compared to b.c of that.
We took Hill (moved up) when Jeffrey was still on the board.

My concern isn't with Smith it is with not having a QB that I trust to see him and get him the ball. We now finally have a respectable WR Corps, RB Corps and O-line and we have a huge unknown at the one position that can make it all work. I hope Geno figures it out or one of the other guys shows they should be the guy but I think if the Jets are going to be successful this year it will be with an lights out D and ball control not with a big play O.
Of course I hope we can have a dominating O to go with the D. I just can't see it yet.

Anyone arguing that there was significantly better WR prospects available when he was selected is simply looking at height/weight/speed ratios.
Smith is more than just a deep threat, has elite ball skills, in addition to his blazing speed.
I wanted him before the draft and was/is stoked now. He can eventually be a #1, but for now is a ridiculously perfect fit with Marshall and Decker.

If it's a red flag against someone that they thought of quitting playing football at some point or another, 90% of NFL players have red flags. None of of the rest of this is directed specifically at you, just some additional thoughts. People get hardons for guys like DGB because of his height/speed combo while essentially ignoring the fact that he's extremely unpolished and truth be told, quite shitty in certain aspects as WR. Smith offers everything DGB does other than physical height. He also is flat out better in multiple areas than DBG. I find it rather interesting that a Stephen Hill comparison gets thrown out ther for Smith, when DGB is actually closer to Hill than Smith is.

The thing with DGB is the bust for off field reasons potential that just feels like it would be off the charts in NY. DGB will probably be awesome else where, but we d all be holding our breathes if he suited up for us.
