I think given the new mgmt and recent Hill experience for this team that risk aversion for the latter part of your assessment was too high. Risk adjusted, Big Mac likely had Smith rated higher. I say that trusting the analysis of yourself and Paradis and a lot of folks here who have been touting the guy - because on draft night, the panels on both the networks had football reservations about DGB, specifically that he played soft, was handled by smaller corners and was easy to push off of his routes. You have to remember he only played his freshman and sophomore seasons in college and he was also in the SEC. I'm not drafting him because of what he's done....I'm drafting him because of what he can become. If he played two more years of college ball....... remember Devin Smith played four, I'm pretty sure he would be in consideration for the first overall pick if he kept his head on straight. To me that was a gamble worth taking at our draft position, I think that's one of the things that makes Smith a much better prospect than he is given credit for. He was asked to run 9 routes b/c that's what the coaches asked him to do. But when he did run his other routes on those less frequent occasions, he ran them pretty damn well. I think he has an opportunity to be a great receiver if he gets some good coaching. No amount of coaching can prevent DGB from going bananas off the field. Granted his upside if he fully reaches it is insane, but there is a lot less that as a staff you can control the outcome of (desire, coachability, maturity).

I agree with everything you said but wold like to add one more point about DGB. He kept his nose clean last year and by all accounts was a hard worker even when he knew he would never see the field. Hell....even his coaches at Mizzou petitioned the NCAA to let him play last year. Maybe the lightbulb went on and now he finally gets it. The key word is maybe and only time will tell. I think the risk-reward was worth selecting him in the second round but that's only my opinion. Now I hope Devin Smith turns into that needed dominant receiver we have needed for decades.

Great points. I think he could turn it around, but even if he does that I'd say he is pretty raw. No less than Smith to be sure. I think that is my rub with him being viewed as a better prospect than Smith. He has the off field issues and I would say he might even be a little bit more raw. Also hasn't been been in a real game for over a year I believe. But basically we agree so at this point I am talking in circles lol.
