How can anyone not want the buttfumble play removed from our resumé?
Buttfumble was an embarrassment. On national TV no less. But if I am changing one play its going to be a play that increases our chances ot going to the Super Bowl, which is why I am thnking more about the Championship Games.
One other play that comes to mind for me is a regular season play from 82. We were playing the Phins at the Orange Bowl and we had a 19-17 lead. Uwe Von Schamann kicks a 49 yard FG as time expires and teh Phins win 20-19. If he misses that kick, we win the game and the Division. We would have hosted that Championship game instead of Miami and we would have had a fair shot on a good field. NO mud bowl. I would have liked our chances to get to the Bowl.
Agreed it would be best to change a play that got us to another SB, we would have a little more credibility to absorb the humiliation of the buttfumble in that case.
I've never witnessed a more idiotic play in 20+ years watching this game, it physically pains me to be linked to such an idiotic humorous play that will be associated with us and talked about for the next 100 years.
not a play but if I could change one thing, I'd bitchslap Parcells into promising Peyton anything and everything to get him to enter the draft after his Junior year. If, indeed, it was Parcells' lack of commitment that influenced Manning to return for his senior year, that was the most critical 'play' in Jets history, bar none.
As for a real play, of course Lewis hitting Bledsoe is the biggest one.
There are probably a dozen plays in the PIT AFCCG where any one of them changes the outcome so hard to pick one.
If that's the case, what about taking Marino instead of O'Brian? OMG. Marino w/ our sack exchange? We would have won 3 SBs in a row.
ESPN did this segment for the Colts the other day. I thought it could be an interesting discussion -- besides there isn't much going on between now and the start of training camp next week.
There are a few obvious options to choose from: - Gastineau Roughing the Passer penalty against Cle in 86 Divisional Playoffs - Doug Brien missed FG against Pitt in 04 Divisional Round (Either one) - AJ Duhe pick 6 in 82 AFCCG against Mia in the Mud Bowl - Ike Taylor strip sack of Sanchez leading to scoop and score in 10 AFCCG in Pitt - Muffed kick return against Denver in 3rd Quarter of 98 Championship
Or would you pick something less obvious? Any thoughts?
Good idea for a thread, yet so very very painful. These are all open wounds that I will never get over fully. Sucks. These are the plays that have kept the Jets from being an elite franchise. These plays go the other way and we could very well have 4 or 5 SB rings (rather than one). These plays are the turning point and the difference between the Jets and Giants. Jets are 0-4 in AFC Championship Games, Giants are 5-0. That's it. You just do not get that close very often (no one does) and when you do, you simply HAVE to take advantage and win, cause you never know when it will happen again. We get to the SB each time and we win half the time and we have 3 SB rings. Maybe there is an alternate universe where those plays didn't go against us and the Jets are really like the Cowboys, 49ers or Packers. OMG. I wish I could live there, it sounds like such a nice universe to me. Damn it! Why did you have to bring up this hurt on a Friday no less. Oh well, there's always next year. THis helps -

The Martin fumble came in the first quarter, on our second possession when the game was scoreless. So many fumbles in that game it is hard to keep the memory straight. We lost two fumbles int eh first half, both in Broncos territory: The Martin fumble in Q1 and Keith Byars in Q2. Two more fumbles in the 2nd half -- one on the windblown muffed kick return after Denver cut our lead to 10-7. And another one by Alex Van Dyke as we were approaching the red zone down 10 in the 4th quarter. Add in two picks Vinny threw in the 4th quarter and it all adds up to a major clusterfuck of a game that was right there for the taking.
We hold Elway to 13-34 on the day and still can't find a way to win the damn game because we are -6 in TO margin. I love the Jets, but sometimes I hate them at the same time. That was one of those times.
Correct, I didn't have everything in context, probably a result of me losing my mind during the game. Your overview/synopsis is spot on. In everyone's mind that may not of been the worst loss, but I still think about that one all the time. They were so damn close. I'm getting pissed again just thinking about it.

But its a shared pain. An experience that we all have in common. I like to think of a thread like this as a public service to my fellow Jet fans. Kind of like cyber group therapy. Come to the Hampur and discuss some of the worst memories you have of our shared history.

Yeah, and hopefully it makes it that much sweeter when we do win it all (with an undeafted season)!
I would go with a less obvious choice from the 2010 game in Pitt.
Opening series of the game. Steelers have a3rd and 7 and Roethlisberger throws incomplete pass - I think it was to Emmanuel Sanders. Looks like we force a 3 and out, but a questionable flag is thrown for illegal contact on Cro. Gives the Steelers a 1st down. They would go on a 9 minute TD drive. Our defense was gassed and we had to play from behind all game.
I would have loved our chances had we gotten the ball back after forcing a 3 and out. Could have changed the whole complexion of the game.
The 1998 AFC Championship game......
ANY play that secured our win. the fumble etc...
We would have walked all over Atlanta and won the SB easily.

I don't know that Mo hitting Bledsoe is such a big "play". It's not like Brady wouldn't have been the starter sooner or later, this just made it sooner.
1998 leading 10 - 0 in the 3rd quarter at Denver, a flurry of turnovers, 6 total dooms the Jets to a 23 - 10 loss, Curtis Martin turns over the ball, along with Bires, and others. Win that game, and go to the Super Bowl with a loaded team, and Vinny T playing the best ball of his life. It still haunts me, and is the closest I've ever come to destroying items in my house.
THAT was the game I'd change. Several plays are good candidates. But that AFCCG was the one that had the Jets found a way to win with a 10-0 lead in the 3rd Quarter I could guarantee we win the Super Bowl. It was on a fricken silver platter for the Jets that year.....they would have faced Atlanta, a team they crushed earlier in the regular season. Atlanta shocked the 15-1 Minnesota Vikings to sneak into the Super Bowl and get killed by Denver. The Jets would have won that Super Bowl 27-10. But I digress.....the play I would single out is the 3rd Down and Long that Denver had when they were trailing 10-0. If we can stop them on 3rd down then they punt and I think we win the game somehow. Victor Green let "Easy" Ed McCaffrey get loose downfield for a big completion from Elway. It changed the entire game. Denver had a 1st down in Jets territory and a few plays later Terrell Davis walks into the end zone. Made it 10-7 and the game had turned on a dime.
Victor F**king Green!

But, if you could change the play so Mo hit Brady instead of Bledsoe, I think that fits the thread.

Just posted a very similar opinion before I even read your post. Agree 100%. That was the game....and there were several plays, many of which would have completely changed the outcome. I chose the 3rd and long completion by Elway to McCaffrey when the Jets had Denver completely on the ropes and the ref was ready to give a Standing 8 count! We had them!
It has to be the multitude of plays during the 98 AFCCG. That was the year we would have walked all over the dirty birds and brought home the Lombardi. I can't say that about the other years that we came close and scratched the surface.
In 98.....we would have won it all and I probably would have never joined a Jets Messageboard, to the delight of many others.
