i looked at the video tape to see if i was missing something. around 1330 left in the 4th the colts got the ball back around their 10 yd line. on first down gore rushed for about 8 making it 2nd and 2. then Cluck escapes a failing pocket and rushes for about 21 but there is a holding call on one of the te's. the down and distance didn't change. this subsequently led to a first down and then the colts td.
when Cluck ran on 2nd and 2, how come the down and distance din't change even though his run was called back by a penalty? even if the down only changed it would've been a much better stuation because the next play they ran for no gain. what am i missing?

Had to be because the holding penalty occurred at the 28 yard line, so the ball was spotted ten yards back from there or the 18. Coincidence that it happened to be the same spot as the play began. Thats my best guess without reviewing the tape.

Just to get complete clarity on this issue. The Colts had a 2nd and 2 on their own 18 yard line. Luck ran for a long gain. There was holding on the play which occurred at the 28 yard line. Holding is a spot foul when it is beyond the line of scrimmage. The Jets had two options.
1. They could decline the penalty and it would be 1st and 10 for the Colts from north or the 35 yard line.
2 They could accept the penalty and it will be 10 yard enforced from the Colt's own 28 yard line which would bring the ball back to the 18 yard line. Enforcement of that penalty would make the play short of the line to gain for a first down. The ball would be spotted there and 2nd down would be repeated.
The Jets chose option 2 correctly.

Damn people, first time watching a football game? to me it just felt like every time we get a holding it completely wipes out the play. But we haven't made plays in about 12 years so things get foggy.... possibly |

it just looked wierd. i guess a holding penalty isn't a loss of down play. i went to the rule book on this and apparently, in the right circumstances it looks like a team can run the same play that the colts did with a player running for 10 yards, but also enough to make the first down, and commiting a holding call ad nauseum thereby running the clock down by going nowhere. the key is they have to make enough yardage to get the first down so the other team gets the penalty and not get backed up so far that the play won't work again..
and yes, for those who say it was obvious, i can only say it must have been a rule change fairly recently because holding calls used to be loss of down plays.
