He has allowed himself to get shielded from the ball a couple of times. I like guys who can adjust for the ball a la Marshall or Decker. We have seen some smaller WRs with that ability so I dont think it is a size issue. Also didnt like that he didnt down the guy after the INT. He instead chose to throw a mini tantrum and cost us like 30 yards in field position. Again, small sample size. We shall see. So why don't you wait until you have a fucking larger sample size, like 6 or 8 weeks, or maybe in his second year?... or is it that you like to be first one on line.

Who's complaining about Smith. Kid looks good to me. He's almost always open.
Bottom line is Smith is too fast for Fitz's arm.

He was clearly shoved to the ground. That was massive bullshit. true - and adds fuel to the "NFL games are fixed" fire. The London game is meant to increase interest in American football, which can't be done with blowouts. So, in order to make it interesting and keep people in their seats until the 4th qtr, the losing team (or in this case, the LOSER team) gets ref help: 2 questionable PI calls against the Jets, no call for the mugging Smith got.

That cocksucker reffing the game is as crooked as it gets. I've seen him several times this year and he always stands out. Don't recall seeing him before. it is now officially WWF territory. And really, IDGAF anymore. I've lost an awful lot of interest.

Some GMs would tell you wait 3 years. Maybe we should suspend Smith threads till then. Eh.

The issue lies on three factors, mainly one though.
1) Fitz long ball inaccuracy - discussed in other threads with data evidence 2) Smith's speed 3) Lack of training camp and practices due to broken ribs ****** This is the key.
Simply, Smith is clearly a firework. He has the potential to be electric, and though this can be said for even bad players, go check his highlight reel. Combine his speed with his lack of practice, and when Smith goes to run routes, he is not going based on timing, but based on the route tree itself. Due to this, there is no match right now on placement and timing for Fitz. If you look at almost every throw to Smith, it is specifically underthrown. This will get rectified with time this season as Smith learns to (unfortunately) play down to Fitz's (lack of) strength.
I believe he would thrive with a Flacco or Eli Manning type of QB. He needs to be chasing the ball, not pausing for it to get to him. He needs to be playing ultimate frisbee, allowing him to go full speed and stretch down the field. He has Odell Beckham hands.

I know I need an escape goat. I leave my gate unlocked so that fucker can run all over the neighborhood and then I can blame my wife and make her the scape goat. In the meantime, the Fitzpatrick to Devon smith incompletions have been some of the ugliest incomplete passes of the season - so likely plenty of blame to go around there and the reason why people are on smith's case after only 2 games

in all fairness to smith, marshall has also had some drops. by drops i mean those that he had in his hands and let go, not circus catches. it takes time for the qb to get on the same page as the receiver especially when the receiver can consistently outrun the ball. the only really bad place was him not tackling the cb on the int. that's do to inexperience not ability. would anyon rather have gates or clowney back?

Are people giving him kind of a hard time? He missed training camp then preseason with broken ribs, he and Fitz are not on the same page at all. I think he was drafted with a Geno type QB in mind (ie someone who can throw it deep). Plus he is very slight and doesn't seem to have learned the difference between some college and NFL rules, and doesn't fight for the ball. I think he will be fine given some time. I've been arguing with Joe Caporoso about this for a while now. I think he has been unfair in giving 100% of the blame to Fitz and none to Smith. For example, he shredded Fitz on his website " We know Fitzpatrick does struggle with the nine route and he went 0/3 when targeting Smith on them, all coming down the left sideline. This is the cleanest/nicest release Smith got of the three and should have been a big play if the ball is thrown to his outside shoulder, instead of inside and at the height of the DB’s helmet." The only problem is, his GIF clearly shows Smith drifting toward the sidelines instead of running parallel to it as a proper 9 route should be run. Smith has to reach back over his right shoulder for the ball not because of Fitz, but because he put himself out of position with his shitty route.

The truth is nobody knows who fault it is except for Smith, Fitz and the coaches. Either way I have seen hall of fame QBs and WRs not be on the same page so I am not gonna blow a gasket over a journeyman and a rookie having some issues.
That one ball in the gif from the Eagles game is a ball that should have been caught. Clearly not the best throw but I have seen that play be made countless times by NFL WRs.
I would like to see us try to get him the ball in open space rather than forcing deep balls. Seems like that would be easier.
