my take:
1) Smith is a good downfield pass catcher. not a burner but a guy very good making the catch 30yds/40yds downfield. 2) Fitzgerald is NOT a good downfield passer- he's not accurate and often times receivers are slowing up almost to a halt to wait for the ball to arrive 3) Smith had good passers at Ohio State who put the ball out front and let him run to the pass.
its going to take time for Smith to not only adjust to the speed of the NFL but a different type of passer. can't be blaming a guy who missed most of camp and is just recently back in the fold, especially in week 4.

The only way people should be judging Smith on is if he gets open. How many times have drafted outside WR's who can't get open to save their lives? Smith consistently gets open. That being said to assume that none of the bad passes to him are his fault is not smart. But that's OK. He's a young guy who missed the entire off season. I expect him to get better as the year goes on. He's already shown he can catch the ball and all of his catches have come from running actual routes and not just streaks. Which is a very positive sign. He is a better route runner then he got credit for when he was coming out. Most pre draft assessments had him as a one trick pony bc the large majority of his catches at Ohio State were down the field. I also think anyone trying to compare what he does as a rookie to what Marshall and Decker are doing as seasoned veterans are not being fair at all. I'm excited about what Smith brings to the table bc when he gets up to speed on the offense and on the same page with Fitzy it will make this offense that much more dangerous to defend.

Did Smith play against the Redskins? Yes. Out there for 16 snaps. No targets, obviously. He was open once I recall when a throw went outside to Decker. Not a knock on Fitz, as it has worked for the most part, but he locks in on guys a lot, Marshall especially, and misses other guys open.

Like I said, I have no issue with it. It is working. Sometimes he determines where the ball is going prior to the snap and that can get dangerous. Like I said though, so far so good.
