How appealing is Jets' likely head coaching vacancy? Not very, according to these rankings Rex Ryan almost certainly will get his final shot at the Patriots this Sunday, at least in his role as the Jets' head coach. The Jets are 3-11, and Ryan is well on his way toward being fired Dec. 29, the day after the season ends in Miami. General manager John Idzik, in his second season with the Jets, could also find himself unemployed that day. Bottom line: Owner Woody Johnson is not pleased with what he's seen this season. So while Ryan has one last Jets-Patriots matchup with Bill Belidick, and tries to spoil some of New England's playoff aspirations, the Jets' organization has reportedly already begun seeking Ryan's replacement. How attractive is the Jets' soon-to-be-vacant job to candidates? Not very, according to one ranking. USA Today put the Jets seventh in its 10 most appealing potential vacancies. Here's the full list: 1. Giants 2. 49ers 3. Bears 4. Dolphins 5. Panthers 6. Falcons 7. Jets 8. Jaguars 9. Raiders 10. Washington Not all of these teams will end up firing their head coaches, of course. But what makes the Jets so unappealing, at least based on USA Today's assessment? Here's what USA Today listed as the pros and cons for the job: Pros: You're coaching in the biggest city in the league. You inherit a strong run defense and decent first-round draft pick. Cons: Unique coverage of the team by the local media. An especially impassioned fan base. Constant second-guessing on Twitter by Joe Namath. Left unsaid, as a potential con, is the presence of Idzik. If Johnson decides to retain his general manager, then the Jets would again find their coach and GM on different timelines for job security. Would high-level head coaching candidates want to come work for a GM, in Idzik, who is on thin ice after a less-than-impressive start to his tenure with the Jets? Perhaps a clean slate, with both a new head coach and general manager in 2015, would be the best approach for Johnson. (You can take a look at some potential candidates for the Jets' head coaching job in the photo gallery at the top of this post.) If Johnson retains Idzik, it would be similar to where the Jets found themselves after 2012. Johnson decided to can GM Mike Tannenbaum. But Johnson kept Ryan, and forced Idzik into a marriage with a coach who needed to win now, for his own job security, while Idzik made moves with the future in mind. The retention of Idzik, if it happens, could be the biggest potential downside for the Jets' head coaching vacancy, definitely more so than local media ripping the Jets for stinking. That is part of the deal for any NFL coach, in almost any market. Does Johnson trust Idzk to hire (or at least help hire) the Jets' next head coach? Would a prospective head coach feel wary about taking the Jets job, considering he might soon find himself working for a new general manager? Those are questions Johnson must soon consider (if he hasn't already), as he attempts to make the Jets' head coaching gig as appealing as possible to potential candidates. What do you think, gang? Is USA Today's assessment of the Jets' job accurate? Or is this a more appealing job opening than seventh out of 10, in the list above? Leave your thoughts in the comments section down below. www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2014/12/how_appealing_is_jets_likely_head_coaching_vacancy_not_very_according_to_one_ranking.html

The question should be: How appealing is the Jets GM vacancy with a completely cleared slate/FO.

What I want to know is who these top tier guys are who won't come if Idzik is here? The "there are only 32 of these jobs" argument is not as good as it used to be. People want to be in a good situation b.c if you aren't you could be out in a hurry. Turnover is quick in the NFL. It is even hard to find assistant coaches for a team like ours that is always in turmoil. The right thing to do is a complete blow up and get everyone coming in on the same page. What we really need is for Woody to hire a football person and let them run the entire show.

Yup, whether you're a Rex or Idzik apologist, starting over seems the best route, but other than Harbaugh what guys are we expecting to come in and run the show?

The question should be: How appealing is the Jets GM vacancy with a completely cleared slate/FO. More than this, what GM would want to come here seeing the last guy getting canned after two seasons (2 in 3 years)? You think it was tough last time around getting candidates...this will be a tough sell indeed. Lucky for Woody, there's a cap situation left in nice shape for the incumbent as well as high draft picks but alas, no QB. And therein lies another dilemma in then finding a coach who would want to come here. I'm not so sure that retaining Rex and John isn't the best option at the end of the day. I'm not joking. Completely. Who are they going to attract? Harbaugh isn't going anywhere near Geno and company when he has Cutler, Eli, Ryan or Carr to lead. Who are they going to attract that's better? SF, NYG, ATL, and CHI are more attractive options with OAK being up for debate since they have Carr. I don't believe MIA or CAR will fire their HC and we're learning today that Jay Gruden will return to WAS. JAX has no reason to can Bradley as they are obviously rebuilding. That still leaves a lot of teams above the Jets vying for the top HC's next year. Should be interesting.

I disagree regarding those teams being more attractive options. The bears need to revamp their entire defense and have a real circus to deal with in their QB. Atlanta needs to revamp their entire defense as well, along with their make shift offensive line, Roddy White is a year older as well. The Giants will retain Coughlin unless he decides to retire and that just leaves the Niners which I agree. The Jets have a great defensive line, if they get a piece or two in the secondary and put their players in the positions that they are supposed to play in then this defense can be pretty solid. The QB is the big problem with the Jets, if they can get someone that can run an offense, along with a piece or two on the OLine and draft a talented WR, then this unit can be respectable as well. Plus the luxury of having a cap of potentially around 35-40 million makes the Jets a pretty attractive destination IMO.

And this goes to the HC question more than anything. I agree the Jets have some marketable pieces with some good young talent and cap space and high picks. But what hot HC prospect would want to coach Geno? And there is no guarantee the Jets will get a top QB prospect next year either. It's not a real strong draft for QB's (at this time) for 2016 and if you can't land one going 3-13, that's tough sledding.

Maybe overpay Gamble and he can h ogre Lazor. If I'm not mistaken, they both worked in Philly last season together.
The throw Geno out there in 2015, win 1 game, and then have our choice between Hogan or Cook.

Good young talent? We have a DL, Ivory, and maybe Decker and Harvin that we could classify as young and talented.
Did I leave anyone out? Is there anyone else under 27, 28 that has pro bowl potential?
The lure of our front office positions is that the current regime set the bar incredibly low. Playoffs are a distant memory. Favre slinging it all over the place was literally 6-7 years ago.
If anything, the next GM will get more time to succeed based on hiw bad things have gone between Rex and Idzik.

Any respectable football person would recognize that Idzik is horrible and not reflective of their situation at all. I haven't even heard one good word about the bastard from anyone who's been involved with the NFL on any level except for a handful of people in Seattle, where he doesn't work anymore. The guy sucks. You move on and put shit in the hands of someone who knows what their doing and let them build something worth a shit or at least something that looks like an NFL team. Idzik is incapable of this. And it's only taken him a measly 2 years to prove that overwhelmingly.

And it's only taken him a measly 2 years to prove that overwhelmingly. He has made some good picks although I'm not a fan of his insistence on value and injured players and waiting for FA's to disappear. He's done a great job managing the cap. The only reason I suggest this (as I also can't stand him) is that he does have a vision towards the success of the team to mimic the Seahawks in assembling a physical team that plays solid defense and runs the ball with balance on offense with game management from the QB. I still think this is attainable and will work against these uber-finesse teams.
This team took a setback unlike any I've seen in their top 3 CB's going down. This would cripple any team especially one that faced murderer's row in QB opponents the 1st half of the season. I could still give them all a pass in spite of my tendency to blow it up like everyone else. The problem I now see in looking at the list of teams in need of coaches is that we not only would be relegated to 2nd-tier candidates but also with regard to the GM search. Again, who's coming to NY where they just fired 2 GM's in 3 years. And has anyone ever heard of a GM getting canned after 2 years? has that ever happened?
If this (GM & HC retained) were to happen, and I'm really just playing devil's advocate, John would have to commit to being far more aggressive in FA to give the coach a full complement of starting caliber players. No holes. No waiting for the best possible valued deal. Go get guys.
All I'm saying is this might be the best option available at the end of the day.

Yes of course it's happened, and no one gives a shit what GM was fired 2 years ago. The perception of 2 GMs in 3 years is literally peanuts compared to the perception of working under hot-seat extraordinaire John Idzik... can you find a more unstable job in the NFL??? Fuck no. If i'm Adam Gase, why would i risk the biggest opportunity of my career to work under a total noodle-head who might fuck up another off season and get canned in 2016... Cause you know who ever comes in 2016 is gonna fire Gase and hire his own HC... that's the reality. No one wants to work under a GM who's a bad draft away from getting canned.
