Looking for suggestions for a phone service that is very cheap and essentially just acts like an online voicemail box with some limited features. I have a home phone number that I can't/don't want to ditch because we've had it so long and so many people/contacts have it, but I'm finally ready to dump the terrestrial phone service that we get from our cable/internet provider.
I basically just want to transfer the phone number to a place that's cheap and gives a few options like voicemail and call-forwarding. I'd probably have all the calls that go to that number forwarded to my mobile anyway, not sure I'd even use the number to call from. I'm also not really looking for a service like Vonage that makes you plug a device into your router. Appreciate any suggestions

How close will you be sitting to the phone?
Rotary or touch tone?

Good suggestions. Thanks. I'm familiar with Google voice but haven't really checked it out. I will look into that and Ooma.

I have google voice... you can port a number or get a new one, it has voicemail, rings one or more other phone numbers when you get a call. And its free. I had to lease a building and I made a big for lease sign out of a sheet of plywood but did not want to put my cell # on it, so my sister hooked me up with a Google #. It worked okay to poor, it would ring to my phone no problems but some times had a weird feedback impediment, and it had a voice mail feature that was very sketchy partly because there was a lot of English as a second language inquiries. But it was free so I loved it. I suppose I still have the number?
