We've (my entire building) been without cooking gas for going on I think 8-9 weeks now. And still no stove, of course! I'm sure the cheap LL is going to buy the cheapest possible electric stoves in existence, yuck. Hate cooking on electric, though at this rate we may never have one. Does this mean you have extra time now to post that yoga pants selfies?

We've (my entire building) been without cooking gas for going on I think 8-9 weeks now. In January the idiot who lives down the hall from me apparently decided to renovate his apartment. There had been notices on his front door for days about a dumpster that would be in front of the building (or something) which I didn't understand why it was there, or to who this note was addressed. Well a few days later, there was a dumpster in the street, and a crew of gorillas demo'ing his apartment. Not two hours later the Building Dept shows up and shuts him down with a stop work order for not having a permit. Don't know if they fined him but the landlord got fined $5000. So a day or so later someone reports a gas smell. The FDNY showed up (and made us remove all our stuff from the hallways) and ConEd shut the gas off. They tested for the next few days and couldn't locate the source of the smell/leak/whatever. So weeks later we get a notice from the landlord that the problem will take longer than expected to resolve and in the meantime we should all buy ourselves hotplates. Then, more days later we are told the solution to this problem is that they're going to install new, electric stoves in every apartment. This may become the only building in Manhattan with electric stoves AFAIK. Old building with inadequate electric supply so they have to add all new risers and receptacles. So about 3-4 weeks ago they started this work, the new risers are going - guess where - right in front of my front door! Of course. So this work has been going on for weeks now, drilling, hammering, etc. OMG what a PITA and last week they were in our apt. to draw the cables thru the ceiling and install the new receptacle. YUuuuuuge mess, threw my belongings all over the place and did not replace them after they left (and stole my iPhone charger, which mysteriously they recovered from the "garbage" the next day when I complained). They drilled holes out of the walls and ceiling and did not save the cutouts to fill them in. We got a nice hole in the ceiling, perfect for Ceiling Cat. There was GWB downstairs in the lobby, only 3/8" thick (ceiling is 5/8"). So they finally came and filled in the holes somehow, but the taping/spackling is horrible, you can still see all the outlines of the tape. And today they boxed in the risers in the hallway with the same GWB, no Type X or anything. And still no stove, of course! I'm sure the cheap LL is going to buy the cheapest possible electric stoves in existence, yuck. Hate cooking on electric, though at this rate we may never have one. OMG what giant PITA. I have left the asshole down the hall anonymous nastygrams under his door (which BTW had an eviction notice on it earlier, LOL). *yawn* you can buy pre-cooked pita. so problem solved.

Gas lines probably buried behind walls. Old gas line Could be leaking almost anywhere. Behind walls and in floors, would be very hard to find. Maybe they could pump colored gas thru the line? Really? A race comment? Ebony/Ivory...live together in perfect harmony.... Why not send some Asian gas in there. Or some Mexican gas in that MF'er?!?

This would never happen in the British Isles. They have a very efficient gas board.

You might be on to something there, but they why wouldn't they just install it properly then with the money they're throwing away on this project (despite using Polish illegal aliens to do the work?) Laymans guess? The cost of a bunch of Polish illegal aliens supervised by one guy who knows how to wire a stove... versus the cost of a licensed/certified/approved Plumber and his crew to retro-fit an old building with gas lines...on top of applying for and receiving the appropriate permits? No brainer. You, M'am, are being cheap-fvcked to death. This job did require permits; we found out it was happening when they were posted on the entrance doorway. And, cutting holes through all the concrete floors for the risers was a little more involved than what you're picturing. But I get what you're saying, whatever it took was certainly the easier, and cheaper, way out

Good thing an engineer looked at the conc floor to make sure cutting holes in it is OK.
