Jets' Ryan Fitzpatrick expected to hit open market 0
By Marc Sessler Around the NFL Writer Published: March 7, 2016 at 10:20 a.m.
Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets were a match made in heaven last season.
The journeyman quarterback knitted together one of his finest campaigns for a New York club that came within a hair of the playoffs. The mutual success left Fitzpatrick as a sure-fire candidate to re-up with Gang Green, but the script has flipped two days away from the start of free agency.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that Fitzpatrick is expected to hit the open market, per sources. Rapoport was told the sides are still far apart on a potential deal.
It's a surprising wrinkle after Jets brass spoke about Fitzpatrick as a lock to return. General manager Mike Maccagnan is on record saying the franchise prioritized re-signing the veteran passer who played inspired football under play-caller Chan Gailey.
"Everybody in the organization feels very strongly about this," Maccagnan said in January, after coach Todd Bowles confirmed: "We want him back."
It's possible Sam Bradford's two-year, $36 million contract with the Eagles swung the Fitzpatrick talks in a negative direction.
Bottom line: Free-agent success stories boil down to fit. Fitzpatrick and Gailey know each other well from their days in Buffalo, a familiarity that helped New York get off to a quick start last season. Throwing Fitzpatrick into another situation could quickly turn him back into a ho-hum signal-caller.
We still expect the Jets to make a hard play for Fitzpatrick and get him under contract before all is said and done in Florham Park.

I like Fitzpatrick (particularly his game preparation and his leadership) but I don't want the Jets front office to cave to a big contract We may have seen his ceiling last season and if his contract goes over 10 million a year with 20 guaranteed, I'd prefer to draft, trade for Glennon or pay big money to Osweiler

I know Osweiler's a long shot but he has youth on his side... I think 15 million a year, three years guaranteed, plus a bonus for AFC championship game/Super Bowl. It's a risk of course but with our team is older and I think the risk reward is worth it.

I'm far from an RGIII advocate, but if he comes cheaper than Fitz, I have a hard time believing he is much worse of an option.

Hopefully the Jets are working hard on planB behind the scenes. Given they don't have much cap room unless there are more cuts ahead...whomever signs has to take a large signing bonus to prorate some of that cash over a couple of years.

Good I saw enough with his season ending choke with Buffalo. Add in the tough schedule coming up this year and the real Fitzpatrick shows up. I would go all out for Osweiler 26 years old beat a undefeated NE team. If your going to spend 15 million plus a year get a QB you can build around not a career journeyman backup who has never seen a post season.

With no expectations he has, on occasion, played lights out in his career, not just in New York. However with the pressure on and asked to carry a team ... I don't see it.

I don't care really either way if he stays or goes but I would've thought Fitz staying, to him, would be a no brainer. You're comfortable with the WRs, system, had success and you'll be the starter. Where else are you getting that?
But I guess he's just looking for one last big payday from someone who will overpay due to that success last year.
