Interesting comments from Trump yesterday... looks like hes willing to compromise, and pushing Congress to compromise, if only to be the first President on either side to actually get something done. A little taken aback by this comment, but its at times challenging to parse what he means sometimes: He was referring to nutjobs or alleged/potential nutjobs. He said take the guns and then eval them and if they check out they get them back but to remove the threat immediately until more is known about the owner. I think I'm good with that, if there is real solid evidence, data, reasons for taking the weapons away, other than just someone reporting a neighbor as "a little off". History of treatment, on meds, etc. fine, take the guns. And along with that, we need to do a better job tracking, reporting, and sharing that data. In a way, kind of like the idea of banning people on the no fly or watch lists from buying guns - all it takes is "reasonable suspicion" to get on that list, and innocent people end up on the list due to lots of reasons. So you could have a perfectly eligible citizen denied his 2nd amendment right, all for the "greater good"? Improve the process and Im on board. That's the reason i take pause. Interestingly, I saw the other day, I think its Iowa?, lets legally blind folks buy guns. Crazy you say, at first, but legally they say they cant stop it, plus "legally blind" has such a wide scope that if you're on the lower end, you have enough vision apparently that you could fire a gun. Totally unrelated but shows how convoluted this can all be.

If you're going to take them from the nutjobs mike make sense to keep them from buying them in the first place, no? Cops show up and take away Schizo Joe's AR-15. An hour later he walks into the local gun show and buys another one.

If you're going to take them from the nutjobs, might make sense to keep them from buying them in the first place, no? That would make sense.

That would make sense. Last gun I bought was a handgun a few years ago. I picked it out at a local shop, filled out the paperwork and they ran my name. I then had to go to my County PD where they verified my carry permit, ran my name again and gave me authorization to pick up the handgun from the shop. This, despite having owned guns for 25 years with no problems previously. I had no problem with that. I do have a problem with someone being able to walk into a gun show and walking out with a rifle without any of that. We have to find the right balance of reliable background databases, waiting periods etc., while also ensuring the politicians dont get cute with the limiting criteria as a means to disarm...I.E...who and what defines "nutjob". The NRA, which I dont always agree with... is hugely distrustful of government motives and I think they should be.... In this case it was clear this kid was a problematic loon and it was no secret he owned guns...but Democratic politics kept the local PD from taking any action against this kid because of loss of funding concerns, despite many many calls regarding his behavior. If anything positive comes from this, the failures of local and Federal LE, as well as the machinations of politicians should be closely scrutinized as a lesson of what not to do...and I cant help but thinking jobs should be lost, and some should go to jail in this case. This was avoidable, which is the most painful thing about all of this. Those kids were betrayed by lethargy, politics and incompetence on every level...and it makes me wonder if a closer look at all the previous school shootings, where alot was sh*tcanned for political expediency and anti-gun agendas (media?) would reveal the same.

I got to ask, what handgun did you get?

I got to ask, what handgun did you get? Glock 43, which is basically the single stack version of the 19, which I carried on patrol. Exact same gun, breaks down the same, looks the same etc. but much smaller and concealable. My only other smaller option was a 5 shot ruger spny .38 which I've had for nearly 30 years but rarely carried. Probably not worth a thing, so no reason to get rid of it.

while also ensuring the politicians dont get cute with the limiting criteria as a means to disarm...I.E...who and what defines "nutjob" Oh, you've had anxiety attacks at one point in your life? The 19 is my winter carry weapon. Bigger but not too big. I like that I do not need a second mag all the time. The 43 is for summer carry. Hides easy and still has the same punch. I just need to carry a second mag.

A "grey area" abyss the government can use to disarm. Btw, who wrote that for you? Glock 43, which is basically the single stack version of the 19, which I carried on patrol. Agreed. Teachers, a bad idea and on posturing. Once it is established the place is protected by armed security, the wind goes out of their sails...although, the way this was handled by the Broward County Police seems to belie my point. You need to have committed, alert, vigilant guards, not some guy trying to skate to a pension while staring at HS girls. Also, the system for acting upon early warning Mental Health signs is obviously FUBAR'ed. There was plenty of info on this latest fucker for several different agencies to act and take his rifle...and they all sh*t the bed. Been reading alot of stuff that suggests the Broward County SHerrif was in bed with the politicians who were looking to sh*tcan bad stats, allowing a virtual criminal enterprise of bottom-feeding kids, including this shitbird.. free to act with impunity. Love to see a RICO done on their arses if so. Securing the schools is only one part of a larger equation. Mental health. How we handle warnings. The powers we give schools, police and judges. The sense I get is that the Broward Sheriff is a pseudo-politician. He has to be in bed with them to get elected sheriff. Hopefully the Feds look into this stuff but I have little faith in them. Especially our waste of an Attorney General. They know how to crack down on colleges giving poor black kids money to play basketball. But when a criminal falls in their lap they shit the bed. don't forget those Obozo rules about not punishing school kids for bad behavior. They're not even getting detention. You think someone at their school will call up with a "I've got a potential nutjob" to the local precinct? NOPE.
