He was so inconsistent this year it was frustrating to watch. Agreed. Part of me thinks he could be good in the right situation, but I think Chan used up all his QB whisper chips when we drafted Hack. Let's hope Petty seizes the opportunity and runs away with it. If not the only QB I'm drafting next year is Falk....hopefully he declares next month but I think it's still up in the air.

Next year is going to be such a shit show. I just want Petty to show enough these next 3 games that we don't reach for a QB. I'd like Falk, but I think we're better off waiting. I can't think of one position that is not a need. We're suppose to be loaded at DL, but Richardson will soon be gone soon and Wilk is a lazy turd right now. Our next two positions of strength are WR and RB. Marshall is awesome, but has 1 maybe 2 good years left. Forte has one more year as a 1B RB left, and Decker is always hurt. After that we have a bunch of decent young guys, but no game changers. We're so fucked.

I must be the only jet fan who didn't and doesn't hate the Pick of Hackenberg . I'm with you, Tin.

Petty might be something....Hack is horrible and has been horrible. How many consensus #1 QB's in HS ever amount to anything? Hack will fall into that category.

Mac felt like his other qualities outweighed the accuracy issue, and he was worth the risk in the 2nd rd. Many have already decided that he sucks. I have hope that with patience and coaching he will be a good QB. We shall see.

I am not a big fan of any of these top tier QBs, and to me Luke Faulk looks like a dink and dunk kid with decent arm strength who makes his bones with his completion percentage . I don't think I have ever seen that kid take a snap from under center and he looks like Bryce Petty in the pocket, without his arm strength .

I have hope that with patience and coaching he will be a good QB. We shall see. Actually, the kid kind of reminds me of Eli Manning . He will make some throws that make you stand up and take notice and on the very next drive, he will make a throw that have you wondering if he ever saw a football before . His accuracy is not the problem as much as it's getting his feet and his confidence back in order . Where Eli had his big brother and his dad to help him, this kid had a HC running a college scheme that most excel at in college, but doesn't translate .
Hackenberg is a prototypical old style QB who stands high in the pocket reads a defense and makes the throw. If his OL and receivers are garbage, he will be garbage . He's not a make it up on the fly type of QB . His feet has to be right, and his protection has to hold up for him to make the reads and deliver the ball . The kid developed some awful habits while running for his life at State college . Even under O'Brien, the quality of players at Penn State wasn't great . It just got worst under Franklin who runs his run around and make a play offense .
The best thing for this kid is what's happening to him right now . The one part of his game that doesn't need rebuilding is his understanding of offensive and defensive concepts . He's being educated on the mental part of the NFL game so he knows what the offense is trying to do . This off season, I fully expect the Jets to start working on the physical part of the game . Where his feet need to be when the ball is released . Where his shoulders need to be in combination with his feet, ect .
In college football today, most of the QBs play in a 1 read system where you read 1 receiver, throw the ball up if he even looks to be open and hope the receiver makes the play or take off and run . Sorry folks, but that doesn't translate to the pros. It's why so many of these kids fail when they are drafted high, forced into action due to their lofty draft status and fan and media pressure and declared a Bust when production doesn't meet expectations . Hack is not that type of QB, and that's why he didn't look great in college . The key for this kid will be rebuilding the OL so that when he does get the call, it's not a situation like it was at State college where he's running for his life.
A perfect example of what Hackenberg is was displayed to the Jet fans in the preseason . He came into a game in the 4th quarter and made some throws that had the fan base hyped . The very next week, when forced into action, he looked like he had never played football before . There are people calling Jared Goff a bust and a mistake base of where he was drafted, what he has shown thus far on the field and what the Rams gave up to acquire him . Anyone who saw that kid play at Cal knew that kid wasn't ready for the NFL . He's turning into Geno Smith right before our very eyes, because just like Geno, he wasn't given the time to learn the pro game and learn what he wasn't taught in college . I'm so glad that Hackenberg looked like he did, because it's because of that, the kid will be allowed to develop .
Think about this for a moment. Jet fans hate Geno Smith and he looks like a Pro bowl QB compared to Bryce Petty . Both men has 2 full years in Chan Gailey's offense . Base on those 2, what should Hackenberg look like ?

I can't believe you left Luke Falk off of that list, especially over a stiff like Chad Kelly. I hate Chad Kelly, but he has a ton of talent. The problem with him is that he makes Geno look like a mensa member. If it wasn't for his off the field problems and Johnny football personality I'd have no problem taking him in the 4-7th rounds. Agreed. I know Kelly's issues all too well. To be kicked off a team coached by Dabo Swinney, you must really be a complete and total jerk off. He was an arrogant prick from day one at Clemson. His teammates hated him, the coaches hated him and the final breaking point was when he told the offensive coaches to fuck off and cried about play calling, during the SPRING game at Clemson...Lol. Keep him far, far away from any NFL roster.

I hope I'm dead wrong about Hack and he eventually turns into that franchise QB that all of us Jets fans deserve. I just don't see it.

You can improve arm strength, coverage reading ability and such, but accuracy issues are the hardest to overcome IMO.

Just because he's 6 4 and coachable doesn't mean he can play QB. Look at Penn State since he left...

Just because he's 6 4 and coachable doesn't mean he can play QB. Look at Penn State since he left... I personally would have preferred it if the Jets waited to see if Hackenberg was still available in Round 3, but he is not the reason PSU was terrible and has now had success. He was playing behind an O line with guys who had never played O line before. There were many times that teams rushed only 3 lineman and had multiple free rushers. It is impossible to put into words just how bad the O line was. No way you can't give him a pass for that season. They were that bad. He may, or may not, become a starting QB, or even a competent back-up, but the Jets were not the only team that graded him in the top 5 of available QBs. He was ranked as a third round or better pick by many teams, and just about every team ranked him higher than Dak Prescott. No reason why Hackenburg, like Prescott, can't over-perform his draft ranking.

The other thing about Eli is he seems to do a lot better with big WRs that have a huge catch radius. Hackenberg also fared better when he had that type of WR in Robinson.

I think if you beef up the OL and have Cook/Fournette in the backfield, Hackenberg (who is a good play action QB) may surprise us next year.
