NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports it would take "multiple first-round picks" for the Chargers to trade Philip Rivers.
Rapsheet's report is via ""several sources with the Chargers." Rapsheet emphasizes that the team doesn't want to trade Rivers, but that it hasn't explicitly said he won't be dealt. The Bolts recently approached Rivers about an extension, but were rebuffed. Rivers is on public record as wanting to play out his deal, and says there's "nothing" that could change his mind. Multiple first-rounders would indeed be the going rate for a quarterback of Rivers' ilk, even at age 33.

If he makes up his mind that he doesn't want to sign with the Chargers again (if they're going to LA or any other reason), doesn't the team have to accept an offer from other teams if they don't just want to release him? What kind of leverage do they have?

What kind of leverage do they have? If he refuses to sign an extension they have no leverage but a few options. 1. They can franchise him and pay him a boatload of money for a year while trying to convince him to extend. 2.They can ship him out to another team but if he refuses to sign with that team long term then they may be unwilling to pay a kings ransom for him. It seems to me that Rivers has the leverage right now. He can play out his deal and if they ship him out for a short run to a team he doesnt want to play with he can refuse to sign an extension and worst case scenario its a one year audition. He can take the franchise tag, get paid a boatload and still have the same leverage he had the last year and doesnt have to move his family for a year or he can pull a Peyton Manning and just play out his deal and be a free agent. He has never had the chance to pick the team he wants to play for so this might be appealing to him.

Yes and yes.
Yes yes yes yes yes.
Brees or Rivers is miles ahead of Geno/Fitzy.

Philip Rivers - welcome to Cleveland, where players' careers go to die.
If the Chargers are looking for multiple "first round picks", might as well start with the Brownies, given they hold the Bills' first round pick plus their own.

Payton: I saw we were trading Brees to the Jets. You ball that up and throw it away and hope you never see it again.

Multiple 1st round picks for Rivers? No problem with me...at all.
IF you could tell me:
1. We could extend him for a few years and 2. We wouldn't be in Cap Hell, forced to let Mo walk, etc
then 100% yes to this year's #6 and next year's 1st Round pick.
Do you know how long we've looked for a QB?
Think of the picks this way....you'd use the #6 on Mariota and then give up next year's 1st Round pick to guarantee he's a franchise QB. That's what using two picks on Rivers would do. And I think we could get 6 or 7 seasons of good football out of him.

Never going to happen people. Stop torturing yourselves with different trade scenarios. Rivers or Brees will not be traded.
