The low probability rumors flying around about Philip Rivers and Drew Brees possibly being on the trade block prior to the draft have just enough potential credibility that I thought I'd ask if anyone would be interested in seeing the Jets trade for one of them?
For example, Philip Rivers straight up for the #6? Would you do that? If not, what would it take to give up the #6.....Philip Rivers and a 4th rounder for example?
What about Drew Brees?
I think most of us agree that "on paper" the Jets look to be dramatically better than last year. We actually have a secondary now....we have two WRs that can truly be considered starters, etc. The missing piece or, at a minimum, our biggest question mark is at QB. Even if the window is starting to close on the playing careers for both Rivers and Brees I think bringing either one of them to this team makes the Jets instantly playoff caliber. I don't know how high of an asking price either SD or NO would have but both organizations have valid reasons for considering trades. Rivers is heading into the final year of his deal. The Saints are completely rebuilding.
Just thought I'd throw it out there.

No one's going to agree with me, but I'd give up the entire draft for either of those guys if that's what it took to get them here. It's a throwaway year with geno and the beard anyways. You don't win super bowls without franchise qb's and I'm sick of watching them throw out these 4th tier qb's every year.

I think swapping out first round picks gets it done. Both these teams are trading up to #6 is equivalent to trading 2 first round picks plus a second.

I don't expect playoffs this year because of the quarterback position. Drafting a rookie quarterback means having to develop him, taking a couple of years while we waste the prime years of our best players. The fact of the matter is with Rivers I'd say we are a lock for the playoffs. With Brees? I'd say AFC championship caliber. I don't believe either player is getting moved honestly, but Rivers I could see. I would definitely do our 6th pick for Rivers straight up, if that was what it would be. We would instantly be a playoff caliber team.

I think I'd do the #6 straight up for Rivers too. The problem is money. He'd need a new deal which won't be cheap, we've committed $39m to Revis and need to sign Mo. Can't see how Revis, Rivers and Mo could all be on the team together for the next 3 years.

I'm going to assume that the only way those guys get traded is on draft day. The question really should be:
If Mariota is at 6 when we pick what would you do when faced with these options:
A: Draft Mariota
B: Trade #6 for Rivers and #17 overall
C: Trade #6 for Brees and #13 overall
D: Trade #6 for Browns #12 & #19
E: Draft another player
*First thing. At this stage in their career Rivers and Brees are not worth a #6 pick overall so I would be really against any trade like that. Both teams would be trying to move up to get their QB of the future so that's worth a lot more then just Brees or Rivers, their 1st round pick would have to be included. Now if they were just dealing them prior to the draft I would give a 2nd at the most. Yes you're getting a top 10 QB but you're getting him in the twilight of his career and both of them will need their contracts re-worked and be paid a lot of money.*
I would take Rivers and the 17th overall pick. 3 years younger than Brees coming off a better year than Brees and since it's the last year of his deal we can work out an extension pretty easily without off-setting much money to get him under the cap. Base salary is about $4.25 million less than Brees for 2015 but I'm assuming that would drop anyway with an extension and turning some of that base salary into a signing bonus.
At #17 the Jets would have options at pass rusher and taking a tackle at this spot wouldn't be a reach and would help out the team and their new QB. What do you guys think?

Can't see how Revis, Rivers and Mo could all be on the team together for the next 3 years. We could free up about another $15 - $16MM cap space to fit in a franchise QB: According to overthecap.com: $4MM by restructuring Mangold $3MM by restructurint Decker $3.2MM by cutting Fitzpatrick -- won't be needed anymore $3.5MM by cutting Pace (2) & Babin (1.5) (assumes we get an edge rusher in the draft) $2.5MM by cutting Walls and either Allen/Jarrett (Walls become expendable with all of the CBs we signed and Allen/Jarrett due to Gilchrist signing. There are other back end of the roster guys who could get cut for $500K to $600K each that could save another $2 - $3MM if necessary. I don't see any way to get there without the restructures of Mangold and Decker which will impact the cap in future years. 2016 would be really tight -- Breno and Marshall would almost certainly be cap casualties (Breno is probably a cap casualty anyway unless he elevates his level of play from last season). Means we would probably have to draft a T and possibly a WR this year to have cheap replacements for them on the roster for 2016. Not sure where all of this would leave the possibility of an extension/re-signing for Mo. Bottom line is it could be done, but it would not be easy. I think it is all a moot point anyway. Everything I have read about Rivers is that he is a west coast guy and does not want to leave SD -- not sure he would be willing to sign an extension here. Brees may be more of a possibility, but a longshot as well and how much do you want to give up in trade and cap casualties for a 36 year old QB.

As much as I like Mo, a franchise QB is going to make a much greater impact for this team's fortunes than a 3-4 DE (unless his name is JJ Watt).

I'd take Rivers. He'd be the only guy Cromartie could say to "damn start wearing a rubber bitch"

But draft picks are like lottery tickets. We've had some pretty high picks over the years. What if the choice was... A. Trade the pick for Rivers or use it...for Vernon Gholston (a #6 pick) B. Trade the pick for Rivers or use it...on Dee Milliner (a #9 pick) Of course, the benefit of hindsight is a wonderful. I don't think any of us would hesitate for a second to get Rivers in the above situations. But this is foresight now....I think people value draft picks too much, quite frankly. A pretty big percentage of them simply do not work out. I agree that, as you said, "at this stage in their careers Rivers and Brees are not worth a #6 pick," likely due to the fact you would only have them for 2, 3, 4 years rather than the 12 to 15 years of playing time you could conceivably get out of a draft pick. BUT, there also is no bust risk associated with these proven NFL QBs. You'd get a guy who starts on Day 1 and for every day he's with the Jets, and he'd play at a high level. There IS value in knowing that IMO.

It's going to take a lot more than the #6 pick in the draft to get someone like Rivers from the chargers.
If you were a chargers fan, would you be happy with that deal? Even if that pick ends up being Mariota, you're basically trading a sure thing top 10 QB in Rivers for a rookie QB that may or may not be good. Makes no sense for them. You don't trade away franchise QB's. There's a reason it never happens. They're just so hard to find.

This isn't Madden hahah, it would be hard getting them to part with their quarterback let alone getting another first round pick. It's just not possible. It would take our first round and more to get them.
